Spring Break in winter?

#1 Postby Scott Patterson » Sun Feb 03, 2008 10:06 pm

Weird question, but is anyone ever perplexed as to why now days most schools all the way from Elememtary to Colleges usually have their "Spring" Break in winter or at best the very beginning of spring?

For example, around here Spring Break is March 17-21 and only one day is in spring.

Back when we were kids, spring break was in April. Now it's always mid-March. It's hard to think spring when you still have a bunch of snow on the ground.

Anyway, does anyone else think it's kind of weird that they have it in the middle of March?

At least at the college level, most Spring Semesters end in early May...so early March really is the mid-point in the semester...if you think about it, 'Summer Break' usually starts in May for universities, so technically that is a season ahead in nomenclature too!

Also might have something to do with the way semesters are labelled...there is the Fall Semester which starts in August or September and the Spring Semester which starts in January. Any break during the Spring Semester is really a 'spring (semester) break'.

Or there is no real logic behind it...not ruling that out!

My Spring Break starts March 10, so it's entirely in Winter. The weather is usually warm though.

And summer break actually begins in spring and the fall semester actually starts when it is still summer!

Same for me in college(and back when I was in school), but my sister who is in grade school now has hers in Mid-April. Very odd indeed.

That's true, lol. Although, imo, being in school for most of August is silly. It's extremely hot, and with the uniforms I have to wear it's even hotter. They're so thick.

and here in Toronto..it's not even called Spring Break....
it is called March Break... this year March Break is March 8- 16,, with 2 extra days for the Easter Weekend on March 21 (Good Friday holiday) and March 24 (Easter Monday holiday).

at least they are smart, calling it what it is, because around that time of the year, its is hardly Spring-like usually.
