Phoenix, Arizona - It's spectacular to look at, but if you're inside then it's miserable.
Monday evening, powerful thunderstorms blew up south of Phoenix, kicking up a massive wall of dust and sand that rolled acorss the Phoenix Valley.
Drivers on highways in the area were forced to slow down, with visibility redued to 30 feet.
There were no reports of any accidents.

That IS a haboob in the photo, but not the one in Phoenix-for one, you have a farm implement in the foreground (no farming in the area of Mesa where the dust storm hit) and secondly, the grass is WAY too green to be anywhere around Phoenix.-besides, where's the freeway, the homes and the desert vegetation?

My friend lives in Pheonix and didn't mention anything about dust storm this time around. She sent me pics from the last one they had. Simply incredible stuff.

I drove through a fast developing haboob yesterday at 4 pm on my way home from work. Not ony was the gusty rolling sand moving in across the north valley, but there was a wonderfully omininous combination of cumulus and scud cloud just above the McDowell Mountains to the east. Had I had a camera with me, I would have had a rare shot of it all (assuming I would have actually found a vantage point off the freeway from which to photograph it.) I only had a trace of rain at my station, but more than 1.5" was reported 15 miles north. A wild afternoon.
Looks like we could be in for some more excitement during the midday hours and late afternoon hours today.

It might register on the Fujita Scale

Actually strong dust devils already CAN register on the EF scale all by themselves without the help of a haboob. The strongest can be high EF-1.
