Strangely HOT in South Florida

#1 Postby gatorcane » Mon Jul 16, 2007 12:15 am

I contemplated whether to post this or not because there is no scientific support for this topic but it seems like this summer is very hot across South Florida. Naturally you would expect it to be hot but it seems like this summer just feels hotter than normal. One reason I think it feels hotter is that the easterly windflow has nearly been nonexistent so far and the air is stagnant. We have seen only one weak tropical wave but it passed us by to the south. Some others I have talked to have mentioned this same thing. Not sure if it means anything for the chances of seeing a tropical system but any comments on this topic are welcome.

About per usual here for this time of year...

As my Dad might say, "It's hot because there's too much cement..."

Too true (and scientifically proven - the heat island theory)...

Below normal here in SW La. Many rainy or overcast days. Last week it heated up a bit, had some days of 93-94, but then over the weekend upper level disturbances from Texas moved in. We went overcast again. I actually like this weather. Temps in mid 80's, no direct sun so its easier on the skin and the eyes. Remarked to my wife about it during festivites for the 4th, how nice and pleasant it was to sit outside. Usually can't say that during mid summer in S La. But its got me thinking hurricane weather pattern for S La. Hot weather usually means high pressure at surface, blocking high to steer storms west. Doesn't appear to be the case this year.

Well, down here in SoFla after winter we had a very dry/mild spring. It way very dry and windy. The humidity stayed low and we just didn't get that tropical heat until about a month ago when the summer thunderstroms started coming around and the humidity went up. Now we are back to Florida heat and humidity and it probably just feels hotter after that great winter/spring we had.

I agree with gatorcane, it does seem unusually hot....the air is just standing still. I feel like I need a hatchet to cut the air just to walk across the yard!

The air does seem still. It actually feels more like central Florida. Little wind, very humid and hot. Typically we have stronger winds usually out of the East and Southeast. It just seems the air isn't moving as much as it usually does. The summer of 2005 was alot like this. I will be especially looking towards the south and west this year for South Florida strikes....

Of course the scientific explanation is that there is a large EC trough causine S to SW windflow. A big Bermuda ridge is predicted to build in in which case we may see the usual Easterly windflow build in for August.

I agree Gator Its been severly hot the past 2 weeks..Mid 90's along the coast is not that common and the rain has been west of the Pike so its made it feel worse with no atmospheric relief.
