VERY VERY HAPPY - Torrential rain, hail and gusty winds
ushered in the first official storm - albeit severe - in Phoenix after a long,
long dryspell

CELEBRATING in PHOENIX TONIGHT - WAHOOOOO :Fade-color :Fade-color :Fade-color

I hope the newly-christened 'Arizona Sixgun' will be deluged likewise.
And thanks everyone for all the raindances, candles, good wishes and
blender use to bring 'er in - la Chiquita via Sierra Vista/Tucson is dancing on
the tables tonight! Let her fly - - - - - - - - - - - - --

The last day of rainfall in Phoenix must of been Wednesday, April 16.

Thanks - I recall that you're the resident statistician...Here's another:
the temp was around 104F when it hit and now a few minutes later
we're down to 74F! It hasn't been this cool in months! This is great -
need some Cherry Vanilla Hagen Dazs...but I'm out...oh no!

Storm Reports:

Currently: Temp=73F DP=73 Humidity=100%
Don't see too many readings like this down here in the lower deserts.

We had power outages, trees/roofs/power poles down, Sky Harbor Airport
was closed for 45 minutes due to bad winds and debris on the runways,
flooding all over the place & in Scottsdale (yay, AZSKYMAN - congrats on
your rain too kiddo), hail, and the big news is rainfall amounts:

Ahwatukee = 1"+ rain Chandler=.83+ Mesa=.97+ and on up.
This is big news for us and great fun - as they are interviewing people on
the news tonight, everyone's similing & happy it dumped. Everyone. After
105 days of no precip of any kind and being in the most severe drought
in history, this was a Godsend.

I saw video out of Tucson as they also got slammed along with Sierra
Vista. Don't think Dennis was in the stormpath this time as it swung up
from the Southeast.

Well........it's ABOUT TIME! WoooHooo! Forecast is calling for the same thing tonight.......we got our round of heavy rain around 1100 yesterday morning, had .93" in just 13 minutes. Soooooo glad to see y'all are getting that MUCH needed rain, just not all at once!

Looks like some more convergence this afternoon....very similar to last night except with a little more energy farther north. Could be interesting again by 6 pm or so!!!

I saw a radar from Phoenix last night just as the storm headed into the city looked nothing less than impressive. It was a bonafide solid severe storm.

Only hoping the pattern will continue to help the major rainfall deficits (although, the storms don't have to be severe).

Reason for the shutdown at PHX SkyHarbor:
#1.)Vis from tower way low..below limits for ground traffic.
#2.)LTG..really no prob for Heavy Chebbies(47's77's67s etc) as they have the tab mechanisms inplace.
#3.)Wind Shear Maxed Profile from PHX TDWR(Terminal Doppler Wx Radar)which is as close to real time as one can get...after the DFW Delta
L-1011 TriStar(still my fav commercial Heavy)debacle inbound...she lost it with Pitch/yaw/Roll Rates not picked up by any onboard avionic warning system of Tower WR-74 scope...hence the 1988 rollout of 88-D.
Good systems inplace now with 'Build 10' Software.
#4.)SFC Wind Maxed for any Heavy is 50kt across her nose on rollout to V-1 and V-2.No way a skipper on the deck is gonna risk an abort over Mesa with that kind of crosswind.Even with the GEs spooled up..the HVY RA++ would partially flood the runway and slow her a few knots...just not worth it.
Good Call by PHX Airport GM...well done!Better late than sorry.
Inbound traffic had Max Shear as well...with no gates open even if they slammed her in.

That's exactly right Amanzi - 104 days was a long time, and it looks like
it may be awhile til we get drenched again although Tuc is getting spritzed
right now. The drought is bad, just as Dennis, Steve and everyone have
been explaining over the months and years....

AZ, there were microbursts in the area so they shut down Sky Harbor.
One plane full of passengers coming in to land said it was the worst ride in
their lives; can only imagine the severe updrafts/downdrafts - buffeting
that 'little' 737 or 747 around...or Lear or whatever....Don't want to be aloft
when the Wind Shear alarm starts screaming in the jet and you end up
flying through it. Although 'flying' may be a loose term here... Yes, the
DFW American Airlines incident is what started the whole wind shear debate
and eventuated the alarms being installed into the cockpits. "WIND SHEAR!
WIND SHEAR WIND SHEAR!"
