Strong storms just blew through here. We lost power for about an hour. While the power was out, I decided to take a little cruise.

Lots of trees down :o :o

This one blocked one end of my street.






Here's a gas station sign blown down.




Here are some live wires. Notice the smoke near where the grass meets the pine straw.




Here are crews cleaning a tree up that had fallen across Ga Hwy 53.




Here's one that snapped in my backyard.






And another that uprooted and crashed into another tree, snapping it about 20 ft from the ground.

Wow, that's alot of damage! Sounds like you and your house is safe, that's good!

How strong were the winds, do you estimate?

Yikes! Looks really bad! I'd say you have some roof damage too from the looks of those trees! :o

No damage to my house. Thankfully!

The last 3 photos are trees that came down on my property. None were close enough (even if they had fallen directly toward the house) to hit it.

But as you can see, I'm surrounded by some pretty big trees. I guess it's just a matter of time.

I'm down in a valley surrounded by trees, so my wind speed is always a little lower than what a wind speed reading would be at the top of the hill. Or the tops of those trees that came down :o

But anyway, I had a gust of 29mph.

Had the same type of damage here two weeks ago from storms that blew through here in the pre dawn hours.........................I really need to get my cam back................Btw it looks like you may get some repeats the next day or so with the front hanging around your area.....................Stay safe!

Wow Constructionwx...thank GOD you weren't in the path of any of those trees!!! I think the winds were considerably stronger than 29mph.

I'm not sure if I should be excited or scared to death

I have a question for you. Why did my barometer spike up as the storm came through? As you see on this baro history graph, it coincides with my highest wind gust 29mph, and highest rain rate 5"/hr. Was it the rain falling and compressing the air, or the wind, or both??

And yes, I'm sure they were much stronger further up the ridge than where my anemometer is located. (Even though it's on top of my house)

As you can see, the terrain goes up about 5+ stories within a short distance of my location. I'm ~1155' or so.

Those were impressive pictures! Like others have said, it is fortunate that your house wasn't damaged. Those were some pretty big trees.

You guys have been getting alot of rain dwon there haven't you? Maybe that's why some of them uprooted? I know that the winds had to be pretty strong anyhow to rip down that sign and that power line. Maybe it was straight line wind damage.

Yes Stephanie, we have had well above normal rainfall since the end of last year.

All the trees around here have been weakened by a prolonged drought, 4+ years. Now they are full of foliage, and with distressed root systems they are vulnerable.

And I haven't heard of any tornado reports so I guess it was straight line winds.

ConstructionWx ... that spike may have had something to do on a microscopic level .. strong downdrafts and the heavy rain-cooled air produced quite likely a dramatic drop-off in temperature, and with that heavy, rain-cooled air (and associated gust front), a brief surge upward in atmospheric pressure (much like a cold dome of high pressure in the winter) ...

I'd estimate the highest wind gusts were in the 70-75 mph range based on those damage photos. There was a confirmed 70 mph gust at a home wx station in Haralson county near Bremen.....and 55-60 mph at Dobbins AFB.

Here I'd estimate the wind gusted to 45 mph or so...no serious damage in my neighborhood
(electricity blinked a couple times); but there were trees and power lines down within two miles of my home...also two homes in Douglas County were struck by lightning.

I heard that same thing about the wind gust on the news earlier. They said that it got as high as 75mph! :o Where I am in Marietta I saw a tree down due to a strong gust, and quite a bit of debris on the road. Pretty crazy weather for July!

I wouldn't doubt 70+ mph. I may have to ask Santa for a repeater for my anemometer transmitter . My Mon-in-Law lives just up the street from us, at around 1260'. There is a terrific spot for an anemometer up there. I guess we'll see if I've been a good boy this year

Well, according to the link of the elev. map you provided us with, i'm somewhere around 1200' in elevation, which actually shocked me. I was thinking i was more like 1000-1050'. Thanks again for the link!!

Concerning yesterday's severe weather...I think you guys in northeast forsyth got it worse than us. I estimate the winds at my house in south forsyth got up to maybe 50 or 60mph for a breif period. We had some small branches fall off the trees and alot of leaves everywhere but besides that...in my neighborhood at least...we got off easy i think. BTW, what kind of weather station do you own?
