Panhandle Tornado
6/21/2003 3:52:40 PM
At least two tornados and fierce winds roared across Garden County in Nebraska's Panhandle Friday night, destroying farm buildings, trees and derailing a Union Pacific train.
No one was injured, but plenty of damage was reported.
Larry Collins is emergency management director for the Panhandle region. He says one farmstead was hit about seven miles east of Oshkosh. Collins says that tornado destroyed all the buildings at the farmstead but the house.
Another tornado on the south side of U.S. Highway 26 ripped up trees and cut a swath through pastureland.
Collins says tornado or downburst hit about two miles east of Lewellen around 7:30 pm (Mountain), pushing empty coal cars off a track.
Railroad spokesman John Bromley says 22 of 129 cars derailed at a crossing near Lewellen.
He says railroad officials do not think a tornado caused the derailment, but they did blame strong winds.
