MAN....we had ONE HECKUVA storm yesterday, a WHOPPING .01" of RAIN This is, without a DOUBT, the WORST Nonsoon Season the White Mountains has EVER seen, we can't BUY a DROP of rain, the wildfire is CRANKIN' up here STILL which is unprecidented! My rainfall total for July? "WOW!" .87" and for August .01", the Nonsoon season will be over in 3 weeks for us, can't wait to see what this winter will bring!!


The Greater Phoenix Metro area on the other hand got SLAMMED and I do mean SLAMMED!! Just saw on the news where some areas of the Valley received over 2.36"!!

Yup, Dennis...not your turn just yet. But here in the Valley, 2+ inches just between SE Phoenix and NW Phoenix, and I had blinding, I mean blinding rain for about 20 minutes and steady rain for over 90 minutes totaling 1.08" at my station.

It doesn't seem like it was blinding rain considering you only got an 1" in almost 2 hours, but glad you could at least get that moisture.

FINALLY!!! I received just a hair under 1" today, .98" to be exact and MORE coming........

BTW....Steve DID have blinding rains, saw it on the news today, WOW!

Just to clarify....the blinding rain came in a 20-minute period...probably falling at the rate of about 2" an hour. And then of course down here you must add in the "mud factor" as the rains are always dirty ones for the first 20 minutes or so.

I have watched rainstorms for almost 60 years...and at times during the initial arrival of this storm, it was as intense as any I have witnessed.

Got to remember about the desert. 8" is a wet year. Most of an inch in 20 minutes can turn a dry wash into a raging torrent as you watch.

Good for you Dennis...some needed rain as well. More to come it looks like in the days ahead. A pretty compact little cell northeast of me at sunset made for some great lightning-at-dusk viewing.

The rain rate sensors we had at Fort Huachuca gave instantaneous rates of up to 12 inches/hr during our big boomers. One storm that dropped 3 inches of rain in one hour in 1987 gave a measured maximum rate of 7.2 inches/hour off a recording rainguage. I inferred from that we could easily see maximum rates of 10 inches per hour for a short time during a big storm and our later rate sensor readings confirmed that and then some.

Those are some intense rain rates. Glad you guys are safe though. Looking like a big monsoon surge is headed our way here in the SW the next few days so hoope that we all are ready for it.

Thats the problem with pop-up thunderstorms, one place gets lots of rain while 10 miles to the north may get none

Those storms weren't exactly popup storms-they were dynamically driven since they formed at night and they brought high winds and heavy rain from Casa Grande to north of Phoenix and all points in between and well to the west. It was actually a complex of storms.

Well, 2 days in a row now We had a gully washer yesterday, .97" in just 28 minutes with marble sized hail, INTENSE CG lightning, reckon the Monsoons finally here???

3 days in a row Received .53" yesterday, not quite as intense as the day before but none the less, MUCHLY appreciated! For the month of August I'm at 2.49" just 1.20" away from normal, STILL 3.10" behind for the season since it's conception on 17 July, with high pressure moving from Nevada to the Four Corners by Monday, we should pick back up in intensity and POSSIBLY make up the deficit! *x's his fingers*

Good news for the fires..well I suppose we have to consider this will only make fuel for future fires..but that's how things work..Drink up Dennis! Unfortunately it won't break the long term drought itself..don't know if anything ever will from what I have read..but it's nice your getting something after all. Unfortunately Mother Nature doesn't know how to enjoy in moderation either..

on Aug 1st here in Lake Havasu City we got pound by a storm!!! It was one of those where the sky was flashing 1000's and 1000's of lightning up in the clouds. It was awesome. Also I recored 1.24 inches in 1 hr. It poured here!

Looks like the monsoon is in FULL swing for a coupla days, BTW....yesterday, another .67" to add to the bucket, heck of it is, it's not EVEN MUDDY yet, even after 3+" of rain

Downtown Tucson got nailed by a severe storm for the second day in a row. Yesterday the UofA recorded a 78 mph wind gust and 0.85in of rain in an hour and today they got 73mph and an inch in an hour.

Big complex of storms between here in L. A. and Phoenix this evening and much of the day. Glad I am flying out of LAX at 8 am Monday morning rather than tonight. Would be a bit bumpier than normal.

Kind of a dud yesterday!! Received only .08" which is REALLY OK, watching the storms all around made me THANKFUL we DIDN'T get slammed I believe we didn't the HUGE ones was because the sky never really cleared enough from the night before, stayed overcast which in turn didn't allow for the "super heating" needed to create those BIG DUDES! It's clear this early a.m. so I'm assuming we COULD get POUNDED TODAY!!!

Just got SIDE SWIPPED by the BIGGEST Monsoon storm I've seen in YEARS, if not EONS Kinda GLAD we just got a sprinkle, after the 1.23" we received this EARLY a.m. 0200 till 0345!

Sticky dewpoints in the low 70's here in the Valley this morning. I suspect the desert is ripe for some storms later today as it heats up toward 100 degrees!

Sounds like AZ has been getting pounded the past week or so. Good to hear y'all are getting some much needed rains out there.
