Saturdays wildness in Baltimore......

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Sun Jun 01, 2003 9:30 am

It was a wild Saturday evening in Baltimore after a day of graduations and commencements in many places across the state. The day was basically good. However after 4 PM, thunderstorms became severe over west central Maryland. Fredrick and Carroll Counties were the first to have severe thunderstorm warnings and eventually flash flood warnings as storms produced heavy rains over the same spot for a while. It didn't take much heavy rain to flod creeks and streams in the area since the ground is already saturated from all the precip from the past 8 months.

Between 6:30 and 7 PM, strong thunderstorms occurred in the Baltimore metro area. Outflow was strong and there was lightning in the region also. The wind was generually 10-20 mph with gusts to 25 occasionally. The biggest story however was how ominous the outflow boundary was. It was an amazing scene for about 15 minutes. Then the lightning followed by a brief appearance of a rainbow in the evening sky. An interesting day yesterday and this come a year after a brilliant supercell unleashed itself over Anne Arundel County just south of us with 1 inch size hail. But the updraft ws rounded and rotating. It was honestly beautiful and one year later I witnessed the outflow. Both photo shoots were absolutely gorgeous.

It's windy now as of 10:30 am in Baltimore with gusts to 40-45 mph. No severe wx. However the next chance of thunderstorms will be wednesday with a higher chance Friday into Saturday, some possibly strong in the warm humid air.

Hey!

We only had a few rumbles of thunder up here with some rain. I saw on TWC the radars down in your area - they looked mean! :o
