Southwest Iowa, extreme eastern Kansas, west central Missouri, and northwest Arkansas are in a high risk of severe thunderstorms. Very large hail, damaging winds, and long tracked and violent tornadoes are likely in this region and it could be widespread.

Keep an eye out on this dangerous and deadly situation forecoming.

Folks can keep a close eye on the weather channel, their local media, have a battery powered NOAA weather radio, and sign up for project notify on weather.com off the weather channel.

Despite 1100 severe reports in 4 days, not one person was killed. We want to keep it that way today. Please stay abreast to this dangerous situation.

The volatility of the atmosphere today in that region today makes this a particularly dangerous situation and I expect the SPC to respond with PDS tornado watches later today.

Correction: SPC already has ... in fact as of 2 pm EDT, 3 PDS tornado watches in effect.

What does PDS stand for?

I thought the SPC (Storm Prediction Center) issues watches.

Hey, Eric ... PDS stands for Particularly Dangerous Situation....

The PDS Tornado Watch (and occasionally they are issued for Severe Thunderstorm Watches as well) criteria means that conditions are favorable for significant tornadoes of stronger than F2 in the watch area, and the potential for long-track tornadoes as well ...

The PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watches are usually reserved (I am not exactly sure of the criteria) for large convective complexes such as MCC, MCS, or Derechos ... in layman terms, severe thunderstorms which have the potential for widespread destruction based on damaging winds on a large scale and/or potentially destructive hail.

TWC has been showing video from a storm - more than likely a tornado that struck Leavenworth, KS. Alot of damage there but no reports of injuries, deaths yet... :o

and we have another large Metro area under the gun for large tornadoes-actually two if the tornadoes near Omaha turn out to be big. Nasty Hail swath across parts of Offutt AFB with hail reported up to 4.5 in 1 SW of Offutt.
