ICE/SNOW PROBLEMS AHEAD

Good evening. Ice problems tonight in lower Michigan and in west central new York State as well as east central Wisconsin. You bet ya. We got it tonight. Latest reports indicate 1 inch of ice in Pontiac, Michigan, 3/4 inch of ice in grand Rapids with large trees falling into powerlines. Thus numerous power outages in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Many locations from Big Rapids to Mount Pleasant and points in between including Lansing have seen 1/2-3/4 inch of ice accumulation. There was even hail south of Grand Rapids earlier this evening due to strong thunderstorms.

Meanwhile Oswego, NY is under a state of emergency tonight and that will last for quite some time I'm afraid because the event in lower Michigan is heading towards Oswego, NY late tonight into tomorrow and we'll potentially double the amount of ice accumulation that is on the ground now. Oswego has seen 1 inch of ice. 1/3 of the city is without power or 65,000 customers and unfortunately more ice is ahead for the Oswego area with heavy snow in northern New England with 6-12 inches expected in northern new York state, northern VT/NH, and north central Maine as well.

Looking ahead reveals more problems in the midwest and great lakes later this weekend. Snow will be likely across northern Missouri, Iowa, and northern Illinois Sunday. As the storm winds up, heavy snow with near whiteout conditions can be expected for northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin and central and southern Lower Michigan. Snow will also keep falling into east central Iowa including in Des Moines and the Quad Cities as well. Snow accumulations could easily exceed 6 inches in east central Iowa and in northern Illinois while potentially a foot or more of snow is possible Sunday night into Monday into lower Michigan.

More severe weather is expected also with this pair of weather systems and I'll mention that in my next post. A very active period ahead. Keep an eye out.

If this current forecast holds, the midwest is in line for a spring time winter storm. 6 inches is definitely a good possibility including des moines and the quad cities. Even Chicago will likely see some snow outta this one Sunday into Monday. The winds will gradually increase as well as this storm deepens over the weekend.
