Can't recall seeing anything worded this strongly for Chicago in recent memory. Must admit after the showing yesterday in NE and Iowa (glad to see our members from these area's are ok) hope it's not THAT extreme!

Just once I'd like to be in tornado alley or anywhere near it during tornado season.. lol.. I know what a major tornado looks like {survived an F4 in 1998} but I'd like to see what it is like in the tornado hotbed..

{remembers how vicious the F4 looked just before it came and destroyed my neighborhood}

Lots of reports of hail this evening ranging from pea to golf ball size mainly southwest subs and south side of the city. A tornado reported by trained spotter near Romeoville. Another tornado reported by trained spotter farther south near the town of Chenoa.

Hey Pebbles, did the supercell that hit the Plainfield/Romeoville areas on Sunday miss you? We got missed here by that one (about 5 miles west of Gary) but another smaller supercell developed and gave us some small hail a little after 9 PM...larger hail a few miles away.

As far as strong wording, I recall May 10th 2003 being even more strongly worded. That day, we were in or near the border of the high risk area by SPC. A high end F3 hit just south of Peoria but our area "lucked" out.

We had some hail and thunder/lightening but nothing really in my exact area. Brother was out in Aurora and said he was watching some nice rotation but nothing dropped. Cousin out in Naperville said he could here the sirens off in the distance from that warning. I am really close to downtown and we haven't had a tornado hit here since the I believe it was an F3 that hit the oak lawn area back in the ?70's? My father-in-law remembers it well as his truck got smashed by a building as he was making a delivery inside another one. Some people think the lake stops us from getting anything major as everything seems to hit closer to the Joliet area.

Don't know about an F3 in the 1970's (I'd have to check records) but a strong F4 hit Oak Lawn in 1967 which happens to be the area's deadliest tornado on record (33 lives lost). As far as the lake stopping things, I don't believe it at all but unfortunately many people do. Tell it to the people of Zion who were hit by an F2 in 1996 I think it was. That's about as close to the lake as you can get. The past year Joliet has had 3 F1's and also some F0's so it seems like for whatever reason they have become a tornado magnet in our area.

F2 hit Livingston county on Sunday. Didn't get much press though because there wasn't a tremendous amount of damage...and it was in a rural area.

The day will come when a community closer to Chicago...or maybe even Chicago itself...is hit again. Take that to the bank.

That sounds like the one. Didn't really know the exact details as I have not looked it up...only heard all the older family member talk about it on several occasions. If you do get the exact info can you share the link. Would like to read up about it. Talked to the hubby this morning about chicago tornadoes (he's in the lake prohibits them camp *rolls eyes*) when he reminded me about a funnel cloud we saw a year or 2 back floating past our house. Now wouldn't ya think if there can be funnel clouds over chicago that we could get tornado's too?! LOL

I have some links to information about tornadoes in our area, but not on this computer. I'll get them for you though (hopefully tomorrow). I can tell you that there have been numerous F2 or stronger tornado hits over the years within about a 15 mile proximity to the lake.

The entire 23 county area covered by NWS Romeoville was overdue for F2 or greater tornadoes...until April 20th of this year when we put a dent in it (with 1 F3 and 1 F2 in LaSalle co. and 1 F2 in Kankakee co.). But still the immediate area wasn't hit by an F2 that day and hasn't been since 1997 (Lindenhurst to Gurnee). It's almost too bad that there wasn't a hit that day closer to us...so that it would serve as a reminder to the public that yes, they happen here too and not just on rare occasions.
