Where did the red dirt come from?

#1 Postby senorpepr » Thu Dec 18, 2003 1:25 pm

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MILWAUKEE WI
1220 PM CST TUE DEC 16 2003

...WHERE DID THE RED DIRT COME FROM...

THE MILWAUKEE/SULLIVAN NWS OFFICE WAS NOTIFIED BY MILWAUKEE TV STATIONS AND THE WISCONSIN DNR THAT CITIZENS IN THE COUNTIES OF MILWAUKEE...OZAUKEE...AND WAUKESHA REPORTED A LAYER OF RED DIRT ON VEHICLES. THE RED DIRT WAS DEPOSITED BY THE RAIN DURING THE MID-MORNING HOURS TODAY.

THE RED DIRT...WHICH APPEARS TO BE CLAY-BASED...ORGINATED FROM EASTERN NEW MEXICO. STONG WEST WINDS GUSTING TO 55 TO 65 MPH FOR SEVERAL HOURS MONDAY AFTERNOON LIFTED THE RED DIRT/DUST INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. POOR VISIBILITIES WERE NOTED OVER PARTS OF THE TEXAS PANHANDLE INTO OKLAHOMA MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

THE WIND CIRCULATION ASSOCIATED WITH A LOW PRESSURE BROUGHT THE RED DIRT INTO SOUTHEASTERN WISCONSIN AS THE LOW PRESSURE MOVED NORTHEAST THROUGH WISCONSIN TUESDAY MORNING.

THE SOIL IN EASTERN NEW MEXICO IS VERY DRY...CONSEQUENTLY LENDING ITSELF TO BE LIFTED BY STRONG WINDS.

TO VIEW A SATELLITE PICTURE OF THE DUST/DIRT PLUMES IN EASTERN NEW MEXICO MONDAY AFTERNOON...GO TO THE FOLOWING WEB SITE...

It's amazing dirt can travel that far, I think one time we had dirt from the Sahara desert deposited on our cars
