Serious flooding occurring in northern Georgia!

#1 Postby JetMaxx » Thu Mar 06, 2003 12:48 pm

Very heavy rain from thunderstorms last night has caused serious flooding across much of northern Georgia this morning, including portions of metro Atlanta...

At Buchanan, located 20-25 miles WNW of my location in Douglasville, picked up 6.50" of rain in a 12 hour period ending at 7 a.m. est.
A large swath across north Georgia (centered along a line from Cedartown to Lake Allatoona to Gainesville) recieved 3.00-4.00" of rain, most of it since last evening. The Chattahoochee River is flooding homes in north Fulton and Cobb counties (Roswell/ Vinings); and most other creeks and streams to the north and west of Atlanta are out of their banks.

This is the most serious flooding event I've seen in this area since at least April of 1998.

I saw two flood warnings on the SPC National Watch and Warning Map earlier ... and was concerned last night when the squall line was taking shape, there was a period of serious training occurring in those aforementioned areas.

The western piedmont and mountainous areas of the south east really got the most rain. SInce they needed it I am glad they go so much, but it was maybe too much at once.

Tonight, though the thunderstorms aren't severe, some strong thunderstorms blasted through here earlier this morning around 10:45 pm as a squall line right turned away from the general area of rain and broke away from it, not much wind, but extremely heavy blinding rains.

Tonight, strong thunderstorms with a spectacular lightning show and very heavy rains have hit the area. Fortunately, no flooding as of now, but as I type this, it's thundering again from another area of storms coming in.

The radar from Southern Mississippi and Alabama look ominous. Not so much severe weather, but the potential for heavy rains further south than last night...

As a matter of fact, the national radar loop appears to me the thunderstorms in Alabama are training.

Already, the RUC is lagging behind catching on the thunderstorms in Alabama ATT ... potential heavy rains for Southern Alabama, Southern GA and maybe into Southern SC tomorrow.

Seems like when you cry for rain...it comes in buckets and too much too fast!

Tell me about it, Rob.

Fortunately here, only 1.25" of rain so far with the storm total.
15 hours of observed thunder was something else.
