Temperature Variance

Saranac Lake, New York
Current Temp: +35*F
Low Tonite: -35*F
That's a pretty steep 24-hr temp change...
(in this case, dropping 70 degrees in less than 16hrs!)
Do they keep statistics on temperature variance anywhere so I could have some reference point of how this instance measures up historically?

wow :o that is a huge differance. You could maybe check with the NWS for your zone, on there web-site they normally have archived information. I'm not sure if they have temp variance, but it may be worth looking into.

A very significant temperature variance - especially considering Chinook winds aren't involved.
However, the biggest 24 hour temperature change in the U.S. occurred in Montana with the 24 hr temperature change of 100 degrees. (42* above to -58*).

I was in Colorado Springs the day that they had a 60 degree variance from 6AM to 5PM - only had one set of clothes. UGHHHHHH

A 34 degrees F drop in temperatures was observed in the last 4 hours in Ottawa, Province of Ontario, Canada. As of 9 PM EST, their air temp is -2F and windchill is at 26 below. This cold air is starting to penetrate northwestern NY state (Watertown, Massena).

(give or take 75 miles... but that's not much in these parts

We have large temp. swings like that in the fall here in SW Mo. Some mornings it can start out in the teens and end up in the 80's. Not sure if they keep records of those events on a regular basis, however.
You might contact your local NWS and inquire.

CHAMPLAIN VLY. TEMPS HAVE FALLEN 22 DEGREES IN THE THE PAST 2 HOURS
AT KMSS AS THE ARCTIC COLD FRONT PASSED THRU. RADAR SHOWING SOME
SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS NORTHERN NEW YORK AND THE CHAMPLAIN VLY ALONG
AND AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT. WILL MENTION OCCASIONAL SNOW SHOWERS
ACROSS NORTHERN NEW YORK AND NORTHERN VT ENDING AFTER MIDNIGHT.
EXPECT GRADUAL CLEARING OVERNIGHT AFTER THE COLD FRONT PASSES AS
TEMPS AND DEW POINTS DROP OFF RAPIDLY BEHIND THE FRONT. TEMPS
ALREADY BELOW ZERO IN THE OTTAWA VALLEY. WITH RAPIDLY FALLING
TEMPS ANY PUDDLES WILL FREEZE UP OVERNIGHT AND COULD LEAD TO SOME

Before the records were broken at OKC (Oklahoma City, OK) back on November 11th, 1911 - the record high and low for the date were set on the same day. 11/11/11 - HIGH - 83*, LOW-17*
