wind adv/ high wind watch for DCA and BWI..overall situation

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Wed Nov 12, 2003 3:05 pm

Good evening everyone. Everyone living near Baltimore and DC want to pay attention to this statement from the NWS. It's here, http://www.crh.noaa.gov/data/forecasts/ ... WIND+WATCH

A wind advisory is in effect when sustained winds are between 31 and 38 mph with gusts to 57 mph. A high wind watch is in effect due to the potential for sustained winds to reach over 40mph with gusts to over 60 mph Thursday around midday. Secure all loose objects this evening or better yet just bring them inside so we can avoid further damage from flying debris.

A very strong potent cold front will plow through the Baltimore/Washington area later tonight between midnight and 6 am est with showers and storms. Some of the storms maybe severe with damaging winds along the cold front to 60-70 mph.

Winds will be sustained around 30 mph from Thursday morning through Friday afternoon with gusts to 45 mph, thus the wind advisory. However there will be a few hours around midday Thursday where we could see sustained winds over 40 mph with gusts over 60 mph, thus the high wind watch. A low pressure system is expected to explode and intensify very rapidly over the Great Lakes tonight. Between the deepening low over the eastern great lakes and strong high pressure over the southern plains and Mississippi Valley, a very strong pressure gradient will setup, thus the potential for wind damage and power outages. Folks from the mid atlantic through the northeast into the ohio valley, midwest, and great lakes need to get ready to lose power. That is a very real possibility today right through Friday. Wind gusts between 53 and 56 mph have been reported in Des Moines, Iowa over the past several hours and the situation most definitely will get worse with time. Stay tuned and stay safe folks!

There are alot of dead trees leaning or being supported by other trees from Isabel. Could be a power problem for sure, hopefully not worse.

John, the NWS has issued a Wind Advisory for our region...don't know why it's not a High Wind Watch since almost all surrounding offices have a High Wind Watch.

But here is the text:
