Thundersnow in So. Indiana

Just had 3 beautiful claps of thunder with a snowfall rate of roughly 2"/hr. Big, fat, pregnant flakes too. 8)
The thunder did not have a long rumble at all. Anyone have any insight as to why it would sound different than a spring t-shower?

The snowfall on the ground and also in the air deadens the sound....much like when you clap your hands in a new house with no furniture...you're voice and noises echo all throughout, whereas carpeting, drapes and more items within the structure baffles the sounds from reflecting.

Very true, Rob ...
One other thing to note, isobar, is that sounds travels slower in colder weather because colder air is more dense. I'm not exactly sure how much slower.

Something interesting I found ...
A speed of sound calculator ...

Thanks for the link, Storm. Looks like RH% is a factor also, though not as much as temp. (I plugged in all kinds of figures)
Makes sense about the snow deadening the sound, Rob, though I would think rain would do the same thing. However these flakes were the size of pizzas.
I'm telling you, the sound weirded me out! :o (BTW - "The Delicate Sound of Thunder" by Pink Floyd - great CD)
Thanks for your help guys. Interesting stuff! 8)

Yep, I can now say I've lived a full life and experienced just about every weather event. Thank you God!
Amanzi, If you're interested, I'm on a couple Pink Floyd message boards. They're actually pretty boring compared to this, since they haven't put out any new music in 9 years. Let me know, and I can PM the links.
