Could we stop tornadoes by Building a 'Great Wall' in the MW

#1 Postby StormingB81 » Wed Feb 26, 2014 4:39 pm

Was reading about this and was wondering what some others may think of it? It seems like someone fairy tail...here is some from the article along with the link

There’s a new proposal that calls for building several giants walls across tornado alley in the Midwest.

Could Tornadoes Be Stopped By Building a 'Great Wall' in the Midwest?

Proposed by physicist Rongjia Tao of Temple University, the walls would measure about 1,000 feet high and 150 feet wide. According to his research, it would stop the flow of air from the north and south, preventing tornadoes from forming. The concept stems from China, where mountain ranges from east to west help reduce tornadoes.

You beat me to posting this topic by a mere 4 hours! Man alive :P :P . I found this on twitter a couple of days ago.

My reaction to this? :

You can add this to the pile of funny weather ideas. The person presenting this is a physicist, not a met. Even if the wall was 10X larger, it would have no noticeable effect on tornadoes. Who wants to stare at a giant wall all the time anyways for those who would be in front of it? I like how that paragraph is written, "Devastating tornado attacks"  . There would be no cash to build this when everything else is in disrepair that is already essential. The wall would be weak and eventually fall down to save on costs.

I LIKE this idea! Let's run the wall west to east, from the Rockies to the east coast. That would bottle up all the Arctic air to our north.

Plus, the wall would get the cold air from Canada to rise over the warm American air and we could have a wall-effect snow warning.

This is just as crazy as the turbine GOM wind farms shutting down a hurricane.

PFFT one does exist it's in China, yet Siberian air still makes it to the country!

Seriously building a wall to stop tornadoes is a comical idea. It'll be as successful as downtown buildings preventing a tornado from hitting.
