-1F while camping this weekend (with photo)

#1 Postby Scott Patterson » Sun Oct 07, 2012 8:16 pm

I just set my October record for camping this morning. -1F at Hacking Lake, right near timberline (10,625') in the Eastern Uinta Mountains in far NE Utah. Craig, where I live at 6300' was offically 13F (8F at the house). Before this morning, I've never had a below zero camp in the mountains before November 14.

Water bodies take much longer to cool, but at Hacking Lake this morning, it was cold enough to freeze over the lake about half. Here is a photograph:

Still, it's dry as a bone up there. There should be snow on the ground by now.

Yes, but not at -1F. Here is me shielding my face with a windchill of -61F to -85F:

I did get cold then.

The kids were with me this weekend, and even the kids get out when the windchills are way below 0 :

We have no TV and they only play video games if they are driving, so we have fun a different way. :D We climb 13,000 foot mountains together, even in January.

I'm surprised to see a lake that isn't frozen over, at -1F! Down south, a lot more than just the lake would freeze over! Haha...like all the piping :P

This was just a short cold snap. It's been a very hot summer and early fall, so the water was still relatively "warm" and takes a long time to freeze.
