MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0609
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0813 PM CDT WED APR 09 2008

AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL TX INTO S-CNTRL OK

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 179...

VALID 100113Z - 100215Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 179 CONTINUES.

THROUGH 0230Z...THE GREATEST THREAT OF LARGE HAIL AND ISOLATED
TORNADOES WILL EXIST ACROSS PORTIONS OF WISE...DENTON...COOKE AND
GRAYSON COUNTIES IN N-CNTRL TX.

AS OF 0110Z...A LONG-LIVED SUPERCELL WITH A HISTORY OF TORNADOES WAS
PRESENT OVER ERN WISE AND NWRN DENTON COUNTIES IN N-CNTRL TX MOVING
235/30 KT. THIS STORM /NOW MUCH MORE HP IN CHARACTER/ APPEARS TO BE
MOVING OFF A MORE NNW-SSW ORIENTED WARM OR QUASI-STATIONARY BOUNDARY
INTO A VERY MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER WITH DEWPOINTS IN THE MID/UPPER
60S. INDEED...00Z FWD SOUNDING INDICATED A DEEP...MOIST PROFILE
THROUGH 750 MB...BENEATH MODESTLY STEEP LAPSE RATES WITH MLCAPES OF
AROUND 2000 J/KG.

WHILE THIS STORM IS MOVING OFF THE BOUNDARY...CURRENT FTW VWP
INDICATES THAT LOW-LEVEL SHEAR REMAINS RELATIVELY STRONG ACROSS WARM
SECTOR WITH 0-1 KM SRH OF 200-250 M2/S2. THIS IN CONJUNCTION WITH
THE HUMID BOUNDARY LAYER AND 60-70 KT OF EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR
SUGGESTS A CONTINUED THREAT OF TORNADOES AND LARGE HAIL AS SUPERCELL
CONTINUES ACROSS PORTIONS OF WISE...DENTON...COOKE AND GRAYSON
COUNTIES.

I can't remember about tornadoes in Fort Smith. Reports say there were power flashes.

Yep

On April 21, 1996 at 11:12 p.m., a category F3 tornado struck some of Fort Smith's oldest and most historical downtown landmarks, causing extensive damage.

The tornado, which spawned in Oklahoma and crossed into west Fort Smith near the confluence of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers, killed 2, injured 89 and cost $300 million in damage which includes injuries and damage in the neighboring city of Van Buren. The fatalities were small children from Ft. Smith. At its worst, the tornado was one half of one mile across. After leaving the downtown area, it traveled northwest through industrial and residential sections of north Fort Smith, then crossed the Arkansas river again into west Van Buren and damaged a highly residential area where no fatalities occurred although this area was very populated at the time. The total length it traveled on the ground was 7 miles. In total, there were around 1,800 homes damaged.

Spotter reports Tornado about 1/2 way to the ground with the Fort Smith storm.

He is saying "Saw a power flash and a funnel about 1/2 way to the ground before it became wrapped up in rain...tree damage, ground covered with hail...winds estimated to 60 mph."

My guess for tomorrow in the 0600Z: High risk in a fairly small area from south of St. Louis to near Little Rock, with a very large moderate area that could be upgraded depending on models.

Is it just me or are the models getting stronger for tomorrow?

The WRF has 70-80kt H65 winds with a large strip of 500 m2/s2 3km helicity over Arkansas and Missouri at 18z tomorrow.
