Re: RECORD HIGHS MARCH 2012

#101 Postby Nicko999 » Sat Mar 24, 2012 6:07 pm

It seems that Canada has had 30C+ weather in March before... once

The most incredible spring heat wave in U.S. and Canadian recorded history is finally drawing to a close today, after a ten-day stretch of unprecedented record-smashing intensity. Since record keeping began in the late 1800s, there have never been so many spring temperature records broken, and by such a large margin. Airports in fifteen different states have set all-time records for March warmth, which is truly extraordinary considering that the records were set in the middle of the month, instead of the end of the month.
...
The 29.2°C (85°F) measured at Western Head, Nova Scotia yesterday was the third warmest temperature ever recorded in Canada in March, according to Environement Canada and weather records researcher Maximiliano Herrera (top two records: 31.1°C (88F) at Alberini Beaver Creek BC on March 29th 1926, and 29.4°C in 1921 at Wallaceburg.)[/QUOTE]

Windsor streak ended at 10 consecutive days above 20C... that's a March record pretty easily but just so you realize how historical this heat wave was...

They have never even recorded such long streak in April... Their previous earliest occurrence of 10 (or more) straight days above 20C was April 22-May 2, 1942.

That Beaver Creek temperature record mentioned in the blog I posted earlier is most likely inaccurate. All the surrounding stations were 10-15C colder on that day. The Wallaceburg record seems a little bit more legit because some surrounding stations were only 3-4C cooler.

I'm not sure if that's the same article I posted earlier in this thread but I have to agree that it was one of the most extraordinary weather events I've ever seen and there are tons of competition for that, especially after last year's insanity. It's proof that your wildest weather dreams can come true! :D

Good catch, I've never heard of that record before now, I thought the Wallaceburg ON one was the hottest for March in Canada. Now that you have looked into it maybe the Wallaceburg one is still king. BC can come up with good temps. but I thought it was a bit more temperate than other regions and was less prone to extreme spikes but they sometimes do happen.

Is there a weather.com article that states the number of records broken every day by number now that the insane heat wave is over? There was one posted in the middle of the event but is there a final one? One last thing to note, Windsor ON hasn't really gone cool as they are still getting temps. into the low 20s on and off  .

Craig Colorado too. 73F (old record 68) and ties for 3rd warmest March temperature at Craig Moffat.

Warmest March temps (71F and above):

1. 76F on 3-22-2004
2. 74F on 3-23-2012
3a. 73F on 3-25-2012
3b. 73F on 3-21-2004

Some of the models (mostly ECMWF) show ridging rebuilding later (during and after Easter) for North America that will create a blocking pattern again. Hopefully that means another Heat-Wave and record breaking temps. for a large area. I was hoping for that to occur but much sooner than what is currently progged  . There are already NAM guidance that shows in around 60 hours from now a "heat-spell" for the plains and north into southern Manitoba (again). 90ºF in Minnesota is one :double: .

It appears many locations have set all time record March warmth. Here in Tampa Bay, both Tampa Int'l Airport and Sarasota set records, each at around 74F for the month. Tampa recorded only two days that did not exceed 80F. I recorded zero. Every day hit 80F. Unheard of even for Tampa Bay. I mean, there is always a few cold fronts (or this year it is just front).

77F in Craig yesterday (March 31) was the all time March Record. 69F on March 30 at the Craig/Moffat Airport was also a record.

Meeker Colorado was 78F and also an all time March Record.

Also, 80F in Salt Lake City yesterday (March 31) also was the all time March Record as well.

Other record highs cut and paste from NOAA for other locations.

Colorado:

AT 4:58 PM MDT, THE TEMPERATURE AT THE GRAND JUNCTION REGIONAL
AIRPORT REACHED 80 DEGREES. THIS SETS A NEW RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE
FOR MARCH 31. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 77, SET IN 1946.

Utah:

ALPINE 75 TIED (75 in 2004)
ALTA 56 TIED (56 in 1986)
HANKSVILLE 86 (82 in 2004)
PROVO BYU 81 (80 in 2004)
SPANISH FORK 80 (79 in 2004)
UTAH TEST RANGE 79 (75 in 1986)
WENDOVER 81 TIED (81 in 1917)

Wyoming:

Sorry to see March 2012 go...

Cyclenall wrote:I have a feeling this thread is going to become quite large in the coming weeks. What I'm really interested in is southern Ontario's very warm weather that is coming this week and if it becomes a historic "heat-wave" for March that can compare to March 2000 and 1990. We're off to a great start and the forecast temps. are really encouraging. The main day this week will be the 15th where 20ºC+ is possible in many areas of the province.

I've been waiting so many years to see a March like this and its finally panning out. It's possible this for us in Ontario is a once in a decade type March Break for warmth but I want to see an once in a century type come to fruition  . Overall, the weather pattern is playing out exactly the way I wanted it to and inserted in the 2012 Predictions thread that March would start off really warm and Spring would be record breaking (for southern Ontario).

This is my first post in this thread and I find it to be hilarious. Back then I was concerned with whether it would compare to March 2000 and 1990 not knowing that it would completely obliterate them away and more. It definitely became a historic heat-wave. I thought maybe a once in a decade type event but it turned out to be an unprecedented event (once in thousands of years type meaning more rare than the 1974 Super Outbreak and the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season).

Cyclenall wrote:Some of the models (mostly ECMWF) show ridging rebuilding later (during and after Easter) for North America that will create a blocking pattern again. Hopefully that means another Heat-Wave and record breaking temps. for a large area.

Needless to say, the models have been flip-flopping for at least a week between hot and cold. It keeps going back and forth in opposite directions so its unknown :( . All I want is heat and some severe weather in southern Ontario :layout: :band:

The data for all time March warmth will be coming out and I'll post it here when it find it. Maybe another weather.com article about the number of records broken day-by-day could be posted too.

When I think about the heat-wave I think about the instrumental song by Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme. Fits perfectly :ggreen: .
