Moderate thunderstorm converged over my weather station here in NE Phoenix yesterday leaving .68" of needed rain. Heavier rains both east and west of central Phoenix.

We have also seen the monsoon come to a screeching halt in mid August like last year which is what the operational models are hinting at again for this year. Fortunately, NAME last year pretty much verified my thoughts about the models and the monsoon-they aren't worth crap.

but these AZ storms in Havasu haven't been packing much lightning at all. 2004 was way more active as far as lightning strikes goes in my area.

The monsoon storms in your area have been more tropical in character which is why less lightning.

well shoot! I've been waiting and waiting each day to get a good lightning storm out here in Havasu at night but nothing lately. Looks like the monsoon will be out of here early next week. Hope it returns.

Well the extendeds are not in very good agreement about the return of the monsoon beyond next week. The only thing we have going for us is that the monsoon does what it wants to irrespective of the models. If our actual rainfall had been as high as the model QPF these past three weeks we would be sitting at 15-20 inches of rain instead of 7.98in (which is below normal).

Trying to eek out an inch from today's monsoon storm over NE Phoenix. Stuck at .99" at the moment. Maybe a few drops more will get me to that 1.00"...but it is drying out fast up there!!!

Hey Dennis, saw you didnt get much today. I expected this. Tomorrow looks like your really good chance of more rains and thunderstorms. It looks like the big boomers will get off to a late start giving you rains in the evening, than the morning and early afternoon like this week had. But all and all, a VERY good chance for you. I expect this between 2pm and 6pm to drench your area based on what im seeing in the models, and other factors.

We will definitely get 1 in + here for this evening as we got 0.70 in in 15 minutes and 0.85in in 30 minutes and we have had decent rain since. Geo, I would be very careful about using the models down here-especially for the monsoon. NAME found last year that the only model with any skill whatsoever in it's QPF during the monsoon was the NGM and that beyond 48 hours all of the other models were garbage.

How 'bout that! The old NGM! That's kind of interesting.

I was surprised myself. My son, who worked three stints as a forecaster for NAME, passed that little tidbit of information on to me.
