Lightning strike kills golfer

#1 Postby FWBHurricane » Sun May 30, 2004 10:18 am

DENVER, Colorado -- A lightning strike at a golf course driving range Saturday killed a man and injured his 16-year-old son, a fire department spokeswoman said. Three other people struck at Meadows Golf Club southwest of Denver were treated at the scene, said Cindy Matthews of West Metro Fire Rescue. The 47-year-old victim died at a Littleton hospital, and his son was taken to the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, Matthews said. Their names were not immediately released. Matthews said she did not know the teenager's condition, and a hospital spokeswoman declined to release any information. Les Wilson, of Littleton, said he was on the driving range about 25 feet from the father and son, and that the lightning came without warning from overcast, but not threatening, skies. "It was nothing I would have ever assumed something like this would have come out of," Wilson said. "The golf course didn't even sound the alarm for people to come in off the course. It was just one of those freak deals." He said he saw a flash of white light and was knocked to the ground. "I felt the lightning bolt go through my golf club and then I hit the ground," Wilson said. When he was able to sit up, he said, he saw several people attempting cardiopulmonary resuscitation on two golfers who were struck.
