Tornado Watch for E NC/SE VA Until 4 pm ET!

urgent - immediate broadcast requested Tornado Watch number 74 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1035 am EDT Tue Apr 13 2004

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch for portions of

Eastern North Carolina southeastern Virginia coastal waters

Effective this Tuesday morning and afternoon from 1035 am until 400 PM EDT.

Tornadoes... hail to 1 inch in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.

The Tornado Watch area is along and 50 statute miles either side of a line from 10 miles east northeast of Norfolk Virginia to 20 miles west southwest of Jacksonville North Carolina.

Remember... a Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.

Discussion... very moist and moderately unstable air mass onshore E of wedge front ern NC and into sern corner of VA. With approach of vigorous mid level jet Max from GA shear profiles are very favorable for low topped supercells in warm sector. Damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are likely with any supercells that develop as storms move rapidly newd this afternoon across watch area.

Aviation... tornadoes and a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft to 1 inch. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60 knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm motion vector 23040.

Durham-Franklin-Granville-Vance-Wake-

... Strong thunderstorms with gusty winds will move across Granville... Vance... Franklin... Durham and Wake counties through 415 PM EDT...

At 308 PM EDT... Doppler radar indicated strong thunderstorms along a line extending from Oak Hill to Holly Springs... moving east at 15 mph.

Some locations affected by these storms include... Creedmoor... downtown Raleigh... Oxford... Henderson and Wake Forest.

Gusty winds of 40 to 50 mph can be expected with these storms. Strong winds have already been reported with these storms as they moved through Durham. Strong gusty winds will be capable of blowing around small objects and will also pose a danger to high profile vehicles.
