WEST COAST MAP, TSUNAMI ALERT!!!

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Thu Sep 25, 2003 5:00 pm

http://www.nws.noaa.gov should show it!!! The first waves could hit later tonight potentially along the west coast and Alaska as well!! That's a possible timing. With 8.0 quakes across the Pacific, tidal waves can spread right into california and points north into Alaska. That's been known to happen. So we need to take this very seriously along the us west coast!!!

Tsunamis can travel as fast as 600 mph across the sea surface and are generally well disguised given the deeper layers of water (especially in the Pacific). As the water nears shore, it piles up and the crests/swell increase higher and higher due to the shallower area of water. Tsunamis can be quite destructive and can reach to some very high heights.
