I look at Northern China, Siberia, and the Northern Third of Alaska alot in predicting cold weather, amongst many things to watch. It's my hobby--I'm not a weatherman, but winter is the most interesting of all weather, IMO. It's going to be cold this year, I'll tell you that much--colder than we've seen in awhile.

Sheesh, don't I "WISH"......ol snowmans chompin' at the bit for a COLD, WET, SNOWY EARLY winter! It can start dumpin' as soon as it wants....I've got enough wood laid in for the winter now, "Show me the SNOW!"

Joshua, you should check out the winter outlook at Weather Central. King of Weather did a super job and it is very self-explanitory.

Update: Most of the local area NWS AFDs are saying the GFS is overdone with its cold air. Do you agree -- is the GFS out to lunch or is it on to something?

What's the latest on this big cold outbreak? Our NWS mentioned the coldest air of the season coming next weekend with lows in the upper 50's...that's nice but upper 40's would really get me going!

Your winter sounds like the one I would like to have here in NC. We had a nice one last year, in spite of the ice storm, and I would love to see another good winter with good cold temps and some more snow. Lots of snow!!

Can you see it? The Potomac River frozen 8 feet thick......never thaws in the "summer", snow starts flying around Aug. 20th, lasts til early June. Two to three foot snows are common.........we think nothing of high temps in the negative teens in Washington DC........People have dogsled races east of Virginia Beach in the winter. The Iditarod East is run yearly from the southern extent of winter pack ice off North Carolina in February clear up to Newfoundland and back......The object of the race is to complete it before the ice breaks up............if you get back to off Cape Hatteras as the ice breaks you are disqualified.

Now that's MY kind of winter.

Our local NWS this morning (which is Springfield, MO) has said that the air is looking more likely to produce near freezing temps here by Monday or Tuesday of next week. As of right now they are only forecasting around 40º to blend with the surrounding offices, but they believe that temps will be 30-35º by early next week. :o

Here comes the cold. By the way our average frost here isn't until Oct. 19th.
