Mid Atlantic Summer 2013 Weather

#1 Postby Stephanie » Fri Jun 28, 2013 8:16 pm

I don't EVER remember a wetter period in MY LIFE in the Mid Atlantic than this past month. Per the AHPS precipitation Analysis, during the last 30 days I've had between 10 & 15 inches of rain (bright pink), while normal would be between 4 & 5 inches (which seems excessive);

http://water.weather.gov/precip/

EVERY day this past week, I've driven home during or just after a thunderstorm rolled through Philadelphia and it's surrounding counties. Yesterday's gully-washer brought over 2 inches of rain in the town next to me and I'm going to say that I had the same amount. Tonight's was just as bad and I kept on thinking of the term "Turn Around, Don't Drown", because there were many waves being created by cars driving through the water starting to accumulate swiftly on the side of the road. We've had heavy, training storms in this area in the past that had dropped 10 - 14 inches of rain in two particular areas with in the last 15 years or so and did some real damage like taking out dams to lakes. Thank goodness this is all happening over a period of time, but still.

We were slightly under normal precipitation for the year so far before June and I was concerned that we may be seeing another hot, dry July and August that would put us again into a drought. I hate wishing this rain away, but I really wish the atmosphere would start changing so the areas that really need the rain like the southwest and west would get it. Andrea got it started for us this month and it's like she's never really gone away.

I've had my air conditioner on, but after tonight's storm, it dropped to 70 with lower humidity, so I have the patio and front doors open to let the nice, fresh air in - while I listen to more rain falling... :roll:

I know you would! :lol:

We've officially had our rainiest June on record in Philadelphia in the 142 years they've been keeping records. We've had 10.11" of rain, beating our old record from 1938 of 10.06" and there's storms in the forecast for today.

Extremes all over the US. Death Valley may break a temp record today along with a lot of other western and southern states.

I'm so sorry about your siding! :eek: As a new home owner, I've been on "high alert" myself. The house has french drains surrounding the house and has had some water leaks in the past that were repaired with new windows, but still.

I can't get over all of this rain. I don't remember anything like this. July has been a wet month as well. I just hope we don't see 10+ inches of rain again.

THe hubby climbed the roof and put caulk where the siding meets the house in the channel, we will see if that fixes that..the shed will have to wait, more worried about the house.

With all the heat we are getting this week it should cure the caulk real nice till we get hit wioth another downpour! (probably on Thursday or Friday, just IMHO)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the caulking cures right for your house.

It's the middle of July and it's a 6 - 7 day heat wave. Nothing new but still not fun and very dangerous. Stay safe!

It was 100 degrees outside per my car thermostat when I went to leave from work this evening at 5:30. :eek:

Saw some anvils in the distance to my south so some received some cooling rain. Saturday will be the last day of the heat wave with strong to severe storms popping up from a cold front that will roll through.

Well, summer is over for 2013 and all of that wet weather has been a distant memory. It's been dry the past month, but it won't take much rain in a short period of time to flood rivers, streams and roads. We really could use that storm developing off the Carolinas to head up our way for our first Nor'easter of the fall, but there will be others.

Each of the summer months were distinctly different. June with record rain fall of almost 11". July continued with the rain and the HEAT waves. August was just gorgeous with some more rain, but comfortable temperatures. Very strange year and in all, the wettest summer on record in the Philadelphia area.
