Weather Quizz !!!

#1 Postby Anonymous » Wed May 14, 2003 9:46 am

Ok I won't make you guys too tired, so I'll just put down a few of the 58 questions from my met courses !

Dynamic Meteorology:

8. Which of the following statements is generally valid when poleward moving jet streams move into the upper midlatitudes ?

a. The amplitudes of the long waves decrease
b. Low zonal indexes are reversed
c. The number of long waves increases
d. Associated long waves speed up

9. When changes in intensity of troughs and ridges aloft are forecast, the time differential chart is most valuable in forecasting which of the following features ?

a. surface pressure centers
b. Single height change centers with no apparent history
c. Height change centers due to convergence or divergence not associated with a short wave trough or ridge
d. Height change centers with a well-defined history that are associated with short wave troughs and ridges

10. You are trying to determine the change in intensity of a long wave trough and you notice that the warm air advection on the east side of the trough is less than the cold air advection on the west side. What intensity change, if any, should you forecast for this trough ?

a. It will fill slowly
b. It will deepen
c. It will fill rapidly
d. None

6. Long waves of relatively short wavelength, well-defined major troughs and ridges, and well developed surface cyclones and anticyclones are associated with which of the following wave patterns ?

a. changing long-wave patterns
b. Retrogression of long waves
c. Progressive long waves
d. Stationary long waves

7. Which of the following conditions would not be an indication of the retrogression of a long wave ?

a. Increased cold air advection in the upstream ridge
b. 24-hr height change trajectories do not correspond to the band of maximum winds
c. New height centers appear
d. Surface lows to the west of the major trough position deepen

Basic Meteorology:

HOW MUCH DOES THE AIR COOL AT THE AVERAGE ADIABATIC LAPSE RATE ??

a. 3.3 DEG. F per 1,000 feet
b. 5.5 deg F. per 1,000 feet
c. 15 deg. F. per 1,000 feet

How much does the air cool at the SUPERADIABATIC LAPSE RATE ??

a. 15 DEG. PER 1,000 FEET
b. 5.5 DEG. PER 1,000 FEET
c. 7.5 deg. per 1,000 feet

How much does the air cool at the AUTOCONVECTIVE LAPSE RATE ?

a. 5 deg. F per 1,000 feet
b. 30 deg. C per 1,000 feet
c. 15 deg F. per 1,000 feet.

The lapse rate, commonly expressed in degrees Fahrenheit per 1,000 feet , gives a direct measurement of the atmosphere's resistance to vertical motion.

True or False ??

I would love to see all 58 questions and answers. If I am not having to take the course it is a bit difficult to answer these questions correctly, I would love to know get them correct the first time.

There is much of a chance to get them correct if we didn't have any study material, regardless of my (our) immense interest in meteorology. :)

Kenl, have you ever taken meteorology courses before this year?

No, these are my first ! I ordered two meteorology courses from the Navy online. I guess they're tough, but I could learn allot.
:D :D
