Ten years ago today, where were you?
Ten years ago today, a massive blizzard dumped from 1 to 4 feet of snow from Georgia to New England. Where were you?
I went camping several days before when they were only calling for 6 to 10 inches. We were sataying at a remote cabin off of the Blue Ridge Parkway SE of Charlettsville, VA. The snow started falling Sat. morning and snowed lightly all day. We went hiking and had a good time. When we woke up Sunday morning, 2 feet were on the ground. We packed up and hiked 1/2 mile to our vehicles but we were unable to go far. No chains. It was a three mile hike to the nearest house and at that point the wind was blowing hard and it was snowing hard, so we went back to the cabin. It snowed the rest of the day and all day monday. On Tuesday the sun was out and we started hiking to the nearest road, reluctantly leaving our vehicles. there were times when the snow was waist deep and other times we had to crawl on our bellies to get over the drifts. it took us over 6 hours to hike out. We got our vehicles back 2 weeks later. I will never forget that storm.

We received 14.4 inches here in Cincinnati. I'm trying to determine if this is the storm that was supposed to bring flurries but we ended up getting as I stated, 14.4 inches. Here at our house it was closer to 18 (eastern suburbs). I remember our wx band radio going off at 2 in the morning, heavy snow warning for Portsmouth, Ohio, several hours east of here. I thought that was very odd but when we woke up to several inches of snow and fierce winds, I knew we were in for it. Sure enough early reports were changed from flurries to 7 or 8 inches.

I was still a bachelor. Had the boys over for a blizzard party. Remember having snowballs flying through my apartment. A state of emergency was declared where no one was supposed to drive by Mick was able to get everyone home. 20+" One of three 20+ storms in my life. 1983 and PD2 were the other ones.

Ten years ago I was working a 12 hr shift at an automated plant 6am - 6pm along with a crew of about 28. My daughter was at a winter camp in upstate PA for the weekend and thankfully the folks running the camp were wise and sent all the kids home on a bus when a blizzard was forecast. I had to pick her up at 4AM
(it was already starting to snow pretty good), take her home and then scoot to work.
By 6PM there was 18" on the roads and drifting was starting, most folks could not make it home and stayed at work. They ended up being there until Wednesday morning 6AM as they could not get home and few could get in to replace them if they did. During the day I took a late lunch break and drove around a bit to make sure I was still mobile with my 4 x 4.
I took one person home that lived a mile or so from me in snow over bumper deep. Then I went out and ran around on the backroads in my 95 Ford Bronco, positraction, 351 V8 4 x 4 until almost midnight. I had no idea the state had closed the roads around 7-8PM (?), of course I did not see another vehicle the whole time, not even a snowmobile, much less a cop, cause there was 2 feet of snow on the country roads by then. I miss the Bronco, best 4x4 in the snow I ever had. But the next day there were 15 foot drifts on our country road and I wasn't going anywhere, not even with the Bronco! A couple of days off of work! I felt like a kid again.
It was great!!

Sitting at home in WMass, watching the snow pile up on the back steps again after about a foot was swept off....15.5 inches total, and TWO days (Monday and Tuesday) off from school (only time that ever happened). Snow finished on Sunday evening, but wasn't plowed well going into Monday. And I guess because there had already been a good foot plus of snow on the ground and big roadside snowbanks before that storm hit, the new plowing and huge roadside snowbanks had made driving quite dangerous late Monday.
