Is this Janurary or June?
Nearly 80 degrees on New Years here in SE Louisiana. This is the warmest New Years I can remember. Usually we are freezing our tails off! I got to go out last night wearing a sleeveless shirt! Today was playing with all the kids and it was so muggy! I had a T-shirt on and jeans, but I should of put on shorts because it was so warm. We had no cold air since Christmas night. It looks like no relief in sight. Usually I welcome the warmer temps, but now I am actually looking forward to another cold front to come through. I just want it to feel more like January. Any cool down coming for the deep south? The weather channel is still showing above average temps all week for my area.

The weather channel (or any) long-range forecast is usually incorrect past 3-5 days out. Looking at the pattern and the models...a return to colder weather should arrive by mid January. Nature likes to equalize itself; so after such a warm period, a cold period is surely to follow. We have had temps. as high as 20+ above normal over the last few days here in SE Texas, so a 20+ below normal period could follow. That would mean very cold air, probably the coldest in years. We'll have to wait and see...

I think we will see a significant cold shot within 3 weeks. The latest run of the GFS shows a nice shot of arctic air by January 16th which would bring 850mb temps to well below 0C for most of the Gulf coast. You can not look at models alone though. I believe that the overall pattern will also support decent cold by the end of the month. Like I said...extreme warm usually does not last, but is instead reversed.

Actually yes. You guys are forecasted to be in the lower to middle 60s next weekend with lows in the lower to middle 40s. Inland areas of south Florida may even see 30s. I feel a freeze will be possible to Orlando and Tampa, with a possible frost into inland south Florida. In downtown Boca expect about 64 for a high next Saturday with a low of 43, but the inland suburbs may see a high of 64 and a low of 38-39.CapeVerdeWave wrote:What about southern Florida? 3 weeks is still a good ways off. I don't think any forecast is reliable beyond 5 days. Especially 3 weeks! It is just one of those mild spells right now. I am not saying the cold won't return. Just a week ago, I was scraping ice of the windshield of my car. Now we are in tank tops and shorts. I lived here all my life and it is just a typical winter on the gulf coast. It is very humid here as well which is not good on the hair. LOL. I am ready for another cold snap. But, if there is anytime in winter I want it warm is Mardi Gras. I HATE with a passion watching a Mardi Gras parade in the freezing cold. Because if it gets too cold, I may not want to even go. And I usually always enjoy Mardi Gras.

If you believe the 14-day GFS then I have land to sell you.
Originally the cold outbreak was expected this weekend and now it's 8-9 days later. When it actually gets inside a week and is still showing it(and has support from other models), then I'll buy it.
You have no idea how many times the GFS has shown a major cold outbreak at Day 14 that either A. Never happens or B. Happens a month after it says it will.

From James Spann in Birmingham:
Looks like another shot at a cold air blast at mid-month... but it doesn't look like it will hang around for long with a neutral NAO. If that thing goes negative, we should be colder for a longer period of time.

lets hope the NAO goes negative then. Either way...ANY shot of cold air would be welcome at this point.

Though not the cold shot that could come mid month, a return to nicer weather may come this weekend. The NWS in Houston has FINALLY forecasted highs back in the lower to middle 60s (closer to normal) here in Houston by this weekend. Lows should be in the upper 30s to the lower 40s. This will be more of a return to winter after a stretch of 70s and 80s. The only bad news about next weekend is that strong winds are expected. The strong winds mixed with the dry air will lead to a high fire threat.

No kidding...I've had to run the A/C quite a bit.
I have had a total of 14 fires in the woodstove since October, NO fires in the daytime WITH the windows OPEN and only 1 log at night to take the *chill* off.......We've had 8 nights below freezing the rest have been in the upper 30's to low 40's.........INSANE I'm tellin' ya's
