Never useless. All the same physical/chemical phenemona observed in meteorology are evident in this system and could have been predicted with similar models involving: definition of initial conditions, utilization of known mass and heat transfer models built on known fundamental boundary layer equations augmented with advance mathematical estimation techniques made possible by modern computer algorithms and, of course, horsepower. Plus, it just looks cool.
