Heavy Snow Hits Great Lakes
10 AM EST, January 27, 2004

A potent winter storm that has brought
snow to a large portion of the Midwest
is heading east through the Great
Lakes.

Snow accumulations from this latest
storm have varied widely. Some of the
heaviest snow fell Monday into early
Tuesday across Nebraska, Iowa,
Minnesota and Wisconsin. Duluth,
Minnesota picked up 23.2 inches of
snow by late Monday, making it the
third snowiest 24 hour period on record
there.

Elsewhere, snow amounts were a bit
lighter. Milwaukee had recorded 3.5
inches of snow by early Tuesday
morning, while the Chicago metro area
had picked up between 1 and 3 inches.
The snow stretched south into St.
Louis, where amounts ranged between
1 and 2 inches and east through
Indianapolis where 1.7" of accumulation
had been recorded by 6 AM local time
Tuesday.

A WeatherBug live camera at St.
Gerard School in Lansing, Michigan
depicted a very snowy scene Tuesday
morning as moderate snow greatly
reduced visibility.

Freezing rain made for tricky travel in
Detroit Monday morning. The ice will
change to snow and continue into the
evening hours.

Snow is forecast to be heavy at times in
parts of Indiana, Michigan and into
northwestern Ohio through Tuesday
evening.

Additional accumulations are expected
to range from 2 to as much as 6 inches
from far eastern Illinois into Ohio.
Increasing wind may cause some
blowing and drifting of the snow.
