the 23z sounding at ABE:

Image

notice that there is still very dry air in place, notice the high dewpoint depressions evident by looking at the spread between the actual temperature and dewpoint. that dewpoint of 1F at ABE with a temperature of 14F is further evidence of this. we will need to see more moistening of the column before we can get precipitation to fall.

also expect that temp of 14F to Plummet as evaporative cooling kicks in

yes, snow very soon. there may be a small burst of moderate snow once the column is saturated enough for the precip to reach the surface. the same thing happened in DC a little while ago.

notice the enhanced returns and bands coming up from the southwest.

Quick update...

Currently 16.3 degrees and it is snowing moderately to occasionaly heavy. Snow started around 9PM. Roads are already very dangerous as any mositure that was on them froze solid. Snow has accumulated about a .1" so far. The winds are very gusty...and appear to be gusting in the 20 to 25 mph range. It is bitterly cold with these winds.

More updates to come later.

well like the KABE sounding showed, it has to eat through the dry air first. but once it does there could be a nice burst.

Another update...

Temp has fallen to just under 14 degrees, 13.8 to be exact, with still moderate snow to occasionally heavy snow falling. We have received just about an inch now since it has started. PennDOT is out, but it looks like they might be a little behind the eight ball as it is coming down harder then they can keep up. I have seen about 6 or 7 trucks go by the house (we only live 1 mile from the highway barn) and they have all been plowing what is falling. The winds are still pretty gusty. One moment the snow is coming straight down, and the next, it is falling almost horizontally. Its pretty amazing to watch. This will probably be the last update tonight. I will try to post tomorrow morning when I get to work, if not....it will be sometime in the evening that I will have time to post again. Stay safe everyone tonight.

temp: 15
Dewpoint: 2
Humidity: 54%
Overcast/Virga Storm

The radar has INTENSE band over me yet not even a flurry is falling....I'd assume when it actually starts falling it will fall hard and fast..

I have NEVER seen this much virga in my life...talk about a dry atmosphere...that dewpoint better rise fast...

The question is , how much do we get. I saw channel 6 at 11 PM. The lady was really talking up the Tuesday system.

Yes, Tuesday is looking better run by run. I think this storm is one for PHL north. Am I saying 12+ in Philly? NO of course not. But, it has the potential to be significant. And trends are favoring a bigger storm than the one we are currently seeing.
