Great Lakes Storm Causing Wintry Weather
8AM EST, January 14, 2004

A storm that was spreading a canopy of
generally light snow across the Great
Lakes early Wednesday will also help
to reinforce the much colder air that has
spilled into parts of the east.

Early Wednesday, steady snow had
spread into the Detroit area with flurries
beginning around Cleveland. The
steady snow was expected to spread
south and east, reaching Milwaukee by
midday and Buffalo by the evening
commute. The snow will spread toward
the northern mid-Atlantic tonight.
Snowfall amounts of 4 to 8" have been
reported across northeast Minnesota
with 1 to 4" across northern and central
Wisconsin as of early Wednesday
morning.

Accumulations are generally expected
to range up to 6" with slightly higher
amounts up to 8" possible over parts of
northern Wisconsin, western upper
peninsula of Michigan and northeast
Minnesota where a cold fetch off the
mild waters of Lake Superior was
enhancing the snowfall.

Well ahead of the storm, bitter cold
wind chills were the main story across
upstate New York and New England. A
WeatherBug live sensor in Brockton,
MA reported a temperature of 5 below
zero with steady winds of 9 mph,
making the wind chill a dangerously
cold 25 below zero.

WeatherBug live sensors in northern
New York reported temperatures as
cold as 25 below zero with
Wind chill advisories and warnings
continue through Thursday night for
much of eastern New York and New
England. Wind chills are expected to
range between 0 and 40 below zero in
these areas during the day Wednesday.
