Cold trumps the snow

#1 Postby WEATHER53 » Tue Jan 13, 2004 6:56 pm

Still see 1-3" for DC metro and another 4-5" from late weekend gulf origin event. What is now getting some attention is the cold. Look for temps around dawn Thursday to be 20-25 with light snow and temps will fall to mid teens in the afternoon with the snow cover and winds. This snow will be so dry and light as to easily become suspended again into the air and even though accumulations will be low there will be blowing snow indicative of much heavier storm. Overnight lows at DCA around 5 and Friday's high struggling to reach 20.

Still think the emphasis thru the weekend needs to be on the cold over the snow. Two snow events is significant but cold rivaling 1994 seems on tap for Thursday into early Saturday.

Agreed about the cold, W53. It was 13 degrees this morning, expecting temps to be primarily in the teens for highs through Friday, maybe low to mid 20's during the day Saturday. Low temps Friday morning could be sub-zero, and low temps Saturday morning should be in the 0 to 5 range. This will definitely be the coldest in many years, and probably coldest since 1994.

Besides the cold we will also ahve an unfamiliar occurrence which is this 1-3" will be very dry and with 20+ mph winds it will be easily "re-suspended' back into the air thus reducing visibility in a manner indicative of a heavier snowfall, 3" cannot drift much but it can blow around a lot.
