WINTER STORM WATCH

#1 Postby Anonymous » Tue Jan 13, 2004 4:09 pm

I just went on nws.noaa.gov and my area has a winter storm watch. It looks like we have a good chance of seeing up to 6 inches of snow, or more.

WINTER STORM WATCH

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOUNT HOLLY NJ
352 PM EST TUE JAN 13 2004

.COLD AIR WILL SETTLE ACROSS THE REGION TONIGHT AS AN ARCTIC COLD
FRONT MOVES OFF THE MID ATLANTIC COAST. AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE WILL
MOVE ACROSS THE DAKOTAS TONIGHT AND INTO THE OHIO VALLEY WEDNESDAY
AFTERNOON. THE LOW IS THEN EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO VIRGINIA WEDNESDAY
EVENING BEFORE MOVING OFF THE COAST LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT...

A COLD AIRMASS COMBINED WITH AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE WILL PROVIDE
THE REGION WITH A THREAT OF SNOW LATE IN THE DAY ON WEDNESDAY INTO
THURSDAY MORNING. THIS IS A RELATIVELY WEAK INLAND SYSTEM AND IS
EXPECTED TO QUICKLY MOVE THROUGH THE REGION.

WITH THE EXPECTED TRACK, ALL PRECIPITATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE LOW
IS EXPECTED TO FALL IN THE FORM OF SNOW. CURRENT ANALYSIS SUGGESTS
THAT THE REGION COULD EXPERIENCE FOUR OR FIVE INCHES OF
ACCUMULATION BY THE THURSDAY MORNING COMMUTE. A WINTER STORM WATCH
IS NORMALLY ISSUED FOR THE AFFECTED AREA WHEN AT LEAST FOUR INCHES
OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE.

AS WITH ANY POTENTIAL SNOWFALL EVENT, THE TRACK AND SPEED OF THE
SYSTEM IS QUITE IMPORTANT. STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR YOUR
FAVORITE MEDIA OUTLET THE NEXT TWENTY-FOUR HOURS FOR POSSIBLE
CHANGES.

5 or 6 inches sounds about right, but I would not be surprised if parts of central and southern NJ got as much as 8.

i agree, it does look like the coastal areas will see the most. In my area i am expecting 6-8, I think that is a reasonable total forecast

WSWatchs in the southern section of NJ as that is the criteria for the region. North of that I think the 3-5 call would bring WWA's.

The past few storms the NWS Mt Holly has played very conservative and often has upgraded warning/advisories mid storm.

BTW the initial rain and wind has become snow and wind. Winter has returned with another punch.

Looks as if this is truly New Jersey's kind of winter!!! Didn't Holmdel get clocked with about 15 inches in December?

Maaan, I wish I lived up there!!!! You guys are gettin' one great snow after another!!!!

Like I said, this winter belongs to New Jersey!!!!!!!!

Thats interesting. only 4" for wsw down there, where up here closer to NY area, we need 6" or more to get the watch. Wiht the ETA still riding north, I think theres every bit as much chance of NYC getting in on the action.

i think that NYC will see snow, but location such as the NJ shore and the eastern shore of Long Island will see the most most likely in excess of 6 inches.
