Any Deep South forecasters in here?

#1 Postby Johnny » Wed Jan 07, 2004 1:29 pm

I see that at least 90% of the forecaster in here spent most of there energy in the East and Northeast since that is where they live. Makes sense to me. What I haven't seen is a met or seasoned forecaster in here that lives in the Deep South giving a winter forecast for us down here. I'm not complaining because all of the professional mets and seasoned forecasters have taught me a great deal. I appreciate that. I do know that there are alot of individuals who visit storm2k that live in the Deep South and could benefit greatly from a Deep South met who puts his/her time and energy for us down here in the South. Are there any on here? Just wondering.

The reason I am asking now is because by the looks of it, it is going to get very cold and was wondering how much of this brutal cold will make it down this way. We are coming into the heart of winter and even though we do not get the snow accumulations as the mid-west and Northeast.....we still have a winter and lots of us are very interested.

If you are asking if we have any Professional mets that do "deep south" forecasting or if there are any from this area that are Professional Mets and do other than tropical forecasting, the answer is no. We have a few from the Houston area that are Professional Mets, but have only been posting during the tropical season. We have several amatuers on board who are pretty good with the weather, but not the likes of SF or FlGuy or DT. I will try to make some forecasts based on my experience and knowledge. For the time being I can tell you we are moving into a colder pattern in this area for sure for the next few weeks at least, despite the fact we will see near normal temps over the weekend. Unless the model consisitency dives South I would expect much colder than normal around Thursday of next week. Precip is another thing in this area. The possibilility of winter precip in the SE TX and all along the Gulf Coast depends a lot on the depth of the cold air, which is oftern very shallow in the deep south. However some models are indicating a possibility that the factors will come together for a "deep South" winter precip event around the 18th or so.

vbhoutex, thanks for the information and I pretty much figured their were not many out there besides yourself. I just wanted to make sure. Their was one fella from Houston who was very knowledgeable in tropical weather. I believe his name was Air Force Met. I hope he is around for this coming up tropical season.
DT and SF are darn good but as we know, most of there energy is pointed in other areas which I completely understand.
As of now...again, today's forecast for us down here in Southeast, Texas is colder that what was previously thought. I'm starting to see a trend. It's only 41 degrees right now and with this cloud cover in place, it wont' get too much higher than that, if at all. Lots of rain moving in tomorrow but supposedly temperatures will be on the rise so frozen precip is out of the question. It will be a wet, cold and dreary day from what I have read. I do think it will be colder tomorrow than what they are saying now. As for the future vbhoutex, whatever you see I'd be more than happy to read it. Thanks for your insight.
