DANGEROUS WINTER CHILL AND STORM #2 after today...

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Sun Jan 04, 2004 7:48 am

Good day everyone. While the midwest is dealing with their heavy snow, I want to focus on two other issues, which will come in the wake of the midwest snowstorm. #1 is the cold arctic air, which is really wreaking it's ugly head across big sky country and across the northern plains this morning. #2 another very potent winter storm for seattle and portland. Folks in these two cities need to pay special attention to the following statement in a minute. I'll tell you right now, The Sea Tac and Portland vicinity could be in for their heaviest widespread snowstorm since the after XMAS 1996 snowstorm.

First current obs from big sky country, the northern plains, and Saskatchewan as of 5 am mountain standard time.

MONTANA/NORTH DAKOTA 5 AM MST

Cut Bank: -25, wind nw 8 mph, wind chill -45
Havre: low -31, current temp -22, wind chill -49
Wolf Point: -20, wind west at 13 mph, wind chill -43
Williston: -26. sw wind 8 mph, wind chill -46

SASKATCHEWAN 5 AM MST

Regina: -26, wind chill -50
Saskatoon: -27 wind chill -49
Swift Point: -18, wind chill -47

Meanwhile for Seattle and Portland, a winter storm watch is in effect for Monday night and Tuesday as a vigorous storm system plows into an unusually cold airmass relatively speaking. This is a huge story we need to follow for the Pacific northwest as significant snow is expected even at valley floor locations such as Seattle and Portland. The Cascades could potentially see 2-4 feet of snow with this. In Seattle, 4-8 inches of snow is a possibility with 2-5 inches in Portland. This would be the most significant snow to fall in this region in a heavy and widespread fashion since 1996 after XMAS of that year. Folks in Seattle and Portland need to pay attention to this one. Also Avalanche potential could be enhanced in the cascades over the next day or two by the heavy snow and strong winds accompanying it. Be careful and prepare for this one during the day today into tonight. Tomorrow night into Tuesday maybe too late.

More updates on the pacific northwest soon.
