High Winds, Snow and Cold Temps Hit Plains
December 16, 2003
A snowstorm heading toward the Great
Lakes has dumped heavy snow and
delivered blizzard conditions to parts of
the northern Plains overnight.
Early Tuesday, the snowfall had
tapered off across Iowa, Minnesota and
the rest of the Plains. But the
precipitation continued to slide
eastward changing from rain to snow in
Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan.
Heavy snow warnings and winter
weather advisories continued through
the region for snowfall that could
accumulate 2-6 inches today.
Snow, high winds and very cold
temperatures created blinding white-out
conditions at times overnight in Iowa
and Minnesota. Snowfall was relatively
light with 2-6 inches accumulating
across most of the region, but it created
hazardous conditions as winds blew
drifts across roadways.
Temperatures on Tuesday morning
were in the teens in eastern Minnesota
and when combined with winds as high
as 40 mph, wind chill temperatures
dropped well below zero.
A WeatherBug live sensor in Fergus
Falls, Minnesota measured a morning
temperature of 5 degrees and steady
winds of 20 mph. This produced wind
chills of 15 degrees below zero.
The storm was expected to track
northeastward today across the
northern Great Lakes and into southern
Canada. Snow, gusty winds and cold
temperatures will taper off slowly
across northern Wisconsin later this
afternoon. Snow should continue in the
Upper Peninsula through the day today
and into tonight.
