Snowfall from the past storm and the next winter storm!!

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Mon Dec 08, 2003 9:45 pm

Good evening folks. A busy time in the winter weather dept these days. The following is a final report on snow accumulation from the mid atlantic, northeast, and into new england as well.

Pinkham Notch, NH: 52 inches
Rangeley, ME: 41 inches
Peabody, MA: 35.6 inches
Everett, MA: 28.5 inches with 6 foot drifts
East Boston: 22 inches with 6 foot drifts
Boston Logan Arpt: 16.9 inches
Islip, NY: 19 inches
Central Park: 14 inches
Newark, NJ: 15.3 inches
Philadelphia, PA: 4.8 inches
Baltimore, MD: 6.8 inches of snow
Washington DC, Dulles: 7.8 inches
Washington DC, downtown: 2.3 inches

Baltimore, MD stats for wettest years ever, 2nd wettest ever

1. 1889: 62.35"
2. 2003: 59.15"
3. 1979: 58.98"
4. 1996: 58.31"

Baltimore, MD is only 3.2 inches away from tieing their all time record for wettest year ever. This is a 114 year old record in jeopardy here!! Amazing!!!!

We're not done with wintry weather yet across the country. However the mid atlantic and the megalopolis will see mostly rain showers and possibly a brief shot of heavier rain later this week as opposed to snowfall. Local flooding maybe a concern on top of the snowpack. Luckily this is a quick moving storm, thus the flood threat will be limited at best.

The more immediate concern tonight however is a developing winter storm along the foothills of the rockies moving east northeast. Snow continues in Denver, CO tonight with even heavier snow from eastern Colorado and northwest Nebraska. A disturbance over Nebraska is partly to blame for the heavier snow there. The snow in eastern Colorado partly has to do with the upslope flow on the eastern side of the central rockies. However an area of low pressure is also forming over the Texas Panhandle. This low should intensify over the next few days as it tracks through the southern plains and into the central Great Lakes region midweek.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Wichita, KS through the day Tuesday. A winter weather advisory is in effect for Manhattan and Topeka, KS. A winter storm watch is up for Kansas City, Des Moines, and the Quad Cities Tuesday night through Wednesday. Early indications show snowfall accumulation of 5-7 inches in Wichita, KS, 4-6 inches in Topeka and Manhattan, KS and 3-5 inches in Kansas City. All 4 areas in Kansas will start out as rain before changing over to snow Tuesday from west to east across the sunflower state.

In Iowa, snowfall amounts of 6-8 inches in Des Moines and 3-7 inches in the Quad Cities are likely Wednesday. Rain is expected to change over to snow later Tuesday night for these areas.

All locations within the watch, warning, and advisory areas will also see wind gusts between 35 and 45 mph. This will result in considerable blowing and drifting snow and possible blizzard conditions at times.

More updates on this a bit later.
