Temperatures Plummet as Cold Pushes East
8:30AM EST, November 24, 2003

A strong cold front advancing toward the East Coast Monday morning is
providing rude awakenings to many residents in the Midwest. The front has
plummeted temperatures up to 45 degrees over the last 24 hours in some
parts of Missouri. A WeatherBug live sensor in Potosi, Missouri was setting at 22 degrees at 7AM when at the same time yesterday it was basking in a 62 degree reading.

Another WeatherBug live sensor in Glencoe, IL, near the shores of Lake
Michigan had dropped 42 degrees from 7AM on Sunday as the emperature has fallen from 61 to 19 degrees. The storm system that is delivering the cold air to the eastern U.S. is also responsible for some of the first significant snows of the season in the Plains. 11 inches of snow fell in Hackensack in northern Minnesota in Cass County and 4-9 inches of the white stuff blanketed the Twin Cities area.

Snow whitened the ground from the Michigan to Colorado over the weekend and the strong cold winds blowing behind the storm created whiteout conditions on the open Plains. Some areas of western Minnesota and the Dakotas experienced the first blizzard conditions with blowing snow, winds up to 50 mph and temperatures in the teens. Early Monday, the front was pushing across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and the Central Gulf Coast.

Temperatures have been falling at the rate of 10-15 degrees as soon as the winds shift to the northwest. The magnitude of the cold was being
exacerbated by the winds. Wind chill temperatures had dropped below zero around Chicago. Areas of northern Ohio that are in the high 50s this
morning will see wind chills temperatures below 20 degrees before
noon.

The cold air will flow through the Appalachians early today and by early
afternoon, the temperatures should begin to fall in the Piedmont from
Maryland down through the Carolinas. By late rush hour on the east coast, the frigid winds will be blowing through Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Raleigh, NC. Tuesday morning will dawn with the entire East Coast in the cold air mass and temperatures will be 20-30 degrees
colder at the bus stop and during the commute that the same time on
Monday.

Yes Jim, and our areas will go from the 60's today to the 40's tomorrow - only a 20 degree difference but still not bad.
