Mount Washington presents the most severe combinations of wind, cold, icing and storminess available anywhere in the world where people are on hand to take measurements. The summit lies in the path of the principal storm tracks and air mass routes affecting the northeastern United States, and it is, because of its elevation, biologically and ecologically similar to the subarctic zone.
It stands 6,288 feet above sea level.
BUT THIS MORNING...its a pussy cat....

It's NOVEMBER 22!!? Mount Washington has spent an entire night above freezing and is currently the warmest spot in New Hampshire. It is absolutely beautiful outside and we are already within a few degrees of the record high temperature for the day. The skies are clear, the air is very dry, the winds are light. The summit feels (and looks) like spring. We've even opened up the observation tower doors for a late season air exchange and drying.
The inversion layer that has kept us mild while the valleys fell below freezing last night has also kept the clouds and haze below us. Undercasts have been common and the sunrises and sunsets have been dramatic. Last night for example, as the sun descended through the haze, the disk turned a deep red and the last rays of light to turned the entire summit a scarlet hugh.
Today, the trails have some patches of snow and ice at the top, but the AMC trail reports say no special equiptment is needed to reach the summit! Perfect conditions to get out and take advantage of this beautiful serene November day.
At 11am ET, the temperature is 46F with a light west wind.... that is already a record high temp for this date!
