Major Storm for the Rockies and Plains...
By Accuweather.com Meteorologist Kathy Francis
A strong trough is digging into Pacific Northwest and the Rockies. So far no one, well organized surface storm exists. That will change this weekend as all this energy consolidates into a strong storm over the central Rockies, which will move out into the Plains by Sunday. Cold, arctic air is plunging southward into the northern tier states and will provide an overrunning surface for snow and mixed precipitation well out ahead of the main event.
Specifically over the next 24 hours, one to three inches of new snow will fall in the Oregon Cascades, in the Sierra and in northeast Nevada. One to three inches will accumulate across much of Montana and eastern Idaho, but six to twelve inches of snow will fall over the high mountains of northwest Wyoming as well as in the Black Hills. Several inches will accumulate southward into north central Colorado. A few inches of snow will accumulate across much of the Dakotas and the high plains of western Nebraska; the ground can be covered with snow by tomorrow morning all the way to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The main storm will be over southwest Colorado by midday tomorrow, then out in the middle of the country by Sunday morning with undoubtedly blizzard conditions north and northwest of the storm track.
