I believe they are things from the past that help predict the future...I'm not sure though.

Analogs ... ok, follow with me a bit.

Comparisons of similarities between now and past years to possibly predict future weather. The use of analogs are used by some of the renowned long range prognosticators such as Dr. Dewpoint (Joe D'Aleo) The weather patterns of the past can be compared to observed similar weather patterns/observations of the present and the future (MR and LR forecast model guidance) and the analogs (the past weather) can be compared to see if there's some similarity between the analog year and the current and progged weather pattern. This can give insight to expect what type of weather regions can generally expect.

The key words, 'generally expect' -- with that said... analogs are important or they wouldn't be considered at all. :)
