Tutorial for Making Custom Meteograms

A few years back, one of my coworkers designed a meteogram spreadsheet in Excel. The graphics have been quite popular here, so I thought I would share the technique and files with everyone here. This may also save me from many requests of "make one for my area, please!".

The meteogram spreadsheets below were crafted for the GFS run. However, they can be easily modified to make meteograms from the NAM/ETA or any other model data. I'll post links to NAM/ETA versions in the future.

First thing you'll need is a copy of Microsoft Excel, 2007 or later. If necessary, I can create an Excel 2003 version, but you really should update to a modern version of Excel.

The tutorial takes you through the production step-by-step, with pictures and arrows. The process may look a bit complex, but once you make a few of them you'll find that the whole process takes about 60 seconds.

This is actually a pretty fantastic tutorial you posted, wxman! I honestly never really thought about making my own meteogram, but it does seem like it would be a really cool plan. I'll bookmark this thread for future use and see what happens. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much these things are quite useful (unfortunately I had to lower the scale of mine to 0F for the upcoming forecast period (let's pray it doesn't actually get that low).

A coworker and I have taken wxman57's meteogram spreadsheets and made them a little more user friendly.

New features include:

Automatically puts the city name on the meteogram graph
Automatically changes dates for the model run
One click to generate the whole thing, no other activity required


Instructions for use:

1) You still have to go to the NOAA site in wxman57's instructions and follow those steps to get the data.
2) Then you copy all of the text output (highlight all of it , from GFS at the top of the text output to the end of the 192 hour data) and right click, select copy.
3) Open the spreadsheet, it will ask you to enable macros, select yes.
4) Select the yellow GFS Meteogram Data tab and then simply click on the button #2 "click here" (left click).


Then the magic happens, the spreadsheet does all the work, and the graph appears before your eyes. I've tested this for numerous cities throughout the US, and everything appears to be correct. If you are up to giving it a shot, here is where you can download it:

Here are some altered files I made for meteograms with altered directions included in an image file below. Wxman57 supplied me with the GFS 0-192hr meteogram and instructions on how to include 850mb temps. I altered the spreadsheet for the GFS 192-384 to include it as well and altered the directions originally supplied by Wxman57. I also managed to alter the original excel file and created one for the NAM 84hr that includes 850mb temps and altered the directions accordingly. I may have missed some minor details in the directions, but I did my best. All props goto Wxman57 and his colleague for the initial creation. I simply modified the directions and excel sheets to add 850mb temps to the long range GFS meteogram and to create the NAM.

Sorry the directions are in image files and not .pdf. I would have made instructions in .pdf had I the means.

Did anyone happen to snag any of these meteograms excel sheets I shared? My hard drive died two weeks ago and I'd rather see if someone has them available before I goto the trouble of making the alterations needed to Wxman57's original excel sheets to add 850mb temps to the long range GFS and recreating the NAM's. The file links don't work anymore so I'm hoping one of you guys snagged them.

It seems that my ISP (Comcast) decided that their customers (me) no longer have a need for personal web page space so they shut down the server.

I have the tutorial and spreadsheets and can send them to someone who can post them on another server.

For now, I changed the links to dropbox links. They do work, but I'd like to find a better solution.
