Bring on the mosquitos! My pocket arsenal of repellent is ready! It was great following winter storms in the year of snow (majority of which has been and not ice) with you guys. Hopefully we will have just as many opportunities to discuss winter weather as I do believe we are going into a colder regime. Bluebonnets bloom soon for all of us Texans to enjoy.

I know, I hate the scratch and itch more feeling but no scratch and still itch! That's life in the south for ya. Maybe an ice age can change that lol.

I have NOT missed the mosquitoes! We usually still get them off an on throughout the winter, but that has been one of the nice things about this very cold winter... no mosquitoes!

That's pretty crazy ^ must be some kind of record. If you wipe them all out in a winter, how do they come back? Migrate from Mexico? lol

If the tropical season is as active as they say it's going to be and there is all that rain with standing water, lord save us.

Mosquitoes, like most insects, are cold-blooded creatures. As a result, adult mosquitoes become inactive with the onset of cold weather and enter hibernation to live through the winter. No migration or mass killing due to cold takes place.

Standing water is breeding ground for mosquitoes.....typically winter does not feature as much of that as during the summer in places like florida.

Pretty impressive storm starting to get itself together in Texas. Good comma shape coming along. Had this been a week earlier, what a snowstorm it would be.

Temps in the low to mid 40s around the Red River southward. No snow today, just cold rain. That's what the GFS had been forecasting for the lower levels, even though it forecast snow accumulations. Can't get accumulations with cold rain.

Looks like Snyder with an elevation of 2300 ft. Temp 34 with a 33 dew point. That's 9 degrees colder than Abilene. Some snow in Lubbock and Amarillo, too. So it's mostly in the higher elevations. Nothing close to snow in NE TX yet.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN ANGELO TX
901 AM CST MON MAR 1 2010

.UPDATE...
FORECAST IN THE PROCESS OF BEING UPDATED TO CARRY A
CHANGEOVER TO SNOW ACROSS AREAS OF THE BIG COUNTRY.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
THE UPPER LOW IS TRACKING A LITTLE FARTHER TO THE SOUTH THAN
EARLIER MODELS HAD INDICATED. ENOUGH COOLING OF THE COLUMN
HAS OCCURRED TO ALLOW A CHANGEOVER FROM RAIN TO WET SNOW ACROSS
THE LOW ROLLING PLAINS...NORTHEASTERN PERMAIN BASIN...AND THE
NORTHWESTERN BIG COUNTRY. AS LOW-LEVEL COLD AIR ADVECTION
CONTINUES AND THE UPPER LOW TRACKS SLIGHTLY SOUTH OF EAST...
SOME WRAP AROUND PRECIPITATION WILL AFFECT OUR AREA. HAVE
A TRANSITION TO A RAIN/SNOW MIX THROUGH MID-MORNING WEST OF
ABILENE...WITH THE PRECIP MIX DEVELOPING INTO THE EASTERN
BIG COUNTRY BY LATE MORNING OR EARLY AFTERNOON. HAVE THE
PRECIP BECOMING ALL SNOW ACROSS THE WESTERN BIG COUNTRY
THIS MORNING...AND INTO THE EASTERN BIG COUNTRY BY EARLY
AFTERNOON. WITH A WARM GROUND SURFACE TEMPERATURES STAYING
ABOVE FREEZING...NOT ANTICIPATING TRAVEL PROBLEMS WITH THIS
SNOW. COULD SEE SOME MINOR ACCUMULATIONS ON GRASSY SURFACES.
WILL MAKE DOWNWARD ADJUSTMENTS TO TEMPERATURES BASED ON
CURRENT AND EXPECTED TRENDS. WILL MONITOR DEVELOPING TRENDS
AND MAKE FURTHER ADJUSTMENTS TO THE FORECAST AS NEEDED.

You would think some parts of North Texas would transition over to a rain/snow mix or possibly all snow as this Upper Level Low moves overhead. Temps are approaching less than -3 degrees C at 850mb underneath this low. If the precip is heavy enough, this should bring down that colder air closer to the surface. Something to watch!

Temps are just too warm below 850mb, though. The current and projected freezing level height from Abilene through Dallas is around 3000-5000 ft up. That's too much warm air for the snow to fall through without melting. Looks like the snow will be confined to the panhandle, and temps are already warming there, ending the snowfall.
