Re: SE TX/SW LA winter wx: Arctic Blast here-coldest since 1996
Afternoon e-mail from Jeff...
Strong arctic cold front now well into the Gulf of Mexico.
Freeze line is progressing southward with Huntsville at freezing and upstream temps under full sun only in the upper 20’s over N TX.
Wind Advisory in effect through tonight for most of SE TX.
Skies are clearing over the NW third with this clearing progressing southward. Strong low level dry air advection and winds have helped dry most surfaces although some puddles remain on surface streets. Expect the freeze line to advance very quickly southward toward sun set this evening with widespread freezing temps. by early evening. Strong N winds gusting to around 35mph will make conditions outside very uncomfortable as wind chills fall into the teens.
Temperature forecasts this morning still hold with much of the area seeing several mornings at and well below freezing and some areas staying below freezing for 60 hours or better.
Even with very noisy sub-tropical flow over S TX, it looks like the low levels will be very dry to support any kind of precipitation on Friday…will just go with mostly cloudy to cloudy skies.

Re:
Thanks and by the way I'm beginning to get some "liquid" snow here this afternoon, no accumulation, lol. The temperature is 45 degrees, the winds have shifted to the N at 7 mph. Should I let my 2 outside faucets drip tonight or will I be safe here tonight but definitely let them drip tomorrow night? Again thanks for the info and you try to stay warm now you hear.southerngale wrote:attallaman, I just right clicked on the image and saved it to my computer. Currently 37.4ºf at the house and falling steadily. It was 50ºf when I got out of bed at 8am. Winds are strong from the North and NW gusting to 42 mph so it is already brutal out there. NWS was saying we wouldn't get below freezing before 6 pm in my area. I will be surprised if we aren't at freezing by 1 pm at the latest. About the only way we won't be is if the current trend stops. It appears to me that this is coming in colder and faster than expected. Of note also are the disturbances we are starting to see that have been mentioned earlier. My currrent take for my area near I-10 and Gessner is temps going below freezing no later than 3 pm this afternoon and not getting above freezing till sometime on Sunday and then only briefly. If we get enough or precipitation and any accumulation(I am not predicting this yet) we could easily not get out of the freezing realm till Monday. I expect temps to bottom at around 16ºf Sat and Sun morning with the low tomorrow at around 20ºf and the low on Monday morning about 29ºf. Highs may reach the freezing mark, but I do not expect them to go above that till at least Sunday.
Well I busted on today as far as it going below freezing by 3pm. The surprise is that the sun came out and slowed the temp plunge. Still hanging around 38f depending on where you take the temp from(whose gauge you believe). In about half an hour when the sun gets lower it will be falling again and I fully expect us to be below freezing shortly after sunset. Past that I stand by the forecast I have made.

Same here David. Been stuck at 38 all afternoon in full sunshine. Dewpoints are coming down now (19 at this hour). I bet even with the winds up we fall rather quickly. Boy are those wind chills cold! BRRRR...

Well, I was wrong again. We are already at freezing here at the house and the sun isn't fully set yet. Anyway you look at it we are going to be very cold for the next 4 days! I am upping my forecast low tonight to 22f-24f for my area due to the surprise sunny afternoon. Past that I am still not sure we will see temps above freezing here for a few days. If we do it will be low 30's imo. I do find the moisture coming in from the SW interesting, but all the mets say that the air is just too dry for the moisture to reach the ground if it falls, so I will go with this for now. The changer would be if in some way the lower levels can be wetted up then we could get a precip surprise, though I am not expecting it attm.

I'm really amazed at how far south and strong this cold air mass really is.

Re: SE TX/SW LA winter wx: Arctic Blast here-coldest since 1996
I am watching with interest the snow starting to build in West TX as seen on radar. Between that and moisture coming in from the SW I am starting to wonder if it will get moist enough for some snow tomorrow if it even moves our way. Models seem to pick up on it but then lose it before showing any movement towards the East. I can wish can't I?

So are we!!
If the forecasted temps verify over the next few days it will our coldest in SE TX in 20 years. Icing on the cake would be if we got some snow out of this too, but that is doubtful.

Outdoor heaters are on, but the wind is still stirring, so I just don't know how much good they will do. At least when I sift through the carnage I can say I tried...

I feel for ya bro!! I've seen the pics and it is a beautiful tropical paradise in your back yard. I've covered my Hibiscus' and put the potted Poinsettia in the garage and covered it. Not sure if any of them will make it, but like you said, I tried.

Everything is covered and wrapped except for the Haas Avocado. It's looking real bad since the Dec 4th event and the 24 on Tuesday probably whas the final nail in the coffin for it. Auto Freeze on th pool just started to cycle again. Already had a service call this afternoon for a water leak in an upstairs bathroom. Probably the first of many in the hours ahead. Our plumber is on standby.
HGX has Updated. Looks like Jason and I will not get above freezing until Saturday, if then...

So are we and most of us don't like it. What a waste of cold air if there's no snow.

We are currently at 32. With all the rain today there are still alot of puddling on the roads that will cause some problems so they've already canceled public schools for tomorrow. There was literally a "cat" fight at one of our home improvement stores over pipe insulation. As of 5pm there was simply none to be found. Cajun Mama, I ran to Lafayette this morning (JoAnn's to be exact) and you were getting some of the wet stuff as well. I hope everyone stays warm and cozy for the remainder of the week.

The only schools cancellations as of now have been Calcasieu Parish. That's all that I have heard - All other parishes in SW LA are open.

Don't know if this is true or not. I read at the Houston Chronicles that some parts of Houston area might see flurries.

I totally agree. It's currently 32F here, winds are out of the N at 21 gusting to 32. The arctic express has definitely arrived. I'm glad I don't have to get out of the house today or tomorrow. I couldn't handle this kind of cold all winter. My faucets are dripping again tonight and it's forecasted to be much colder here Friday night and Saturday night. The only snow I received here yesterday was liquid snow just like the kind I receive during the summer minus the lightning and thunder.CajunMama wrote:Stephanie wrote:I'm really amazed at how far south and strong this cold air mass really is.
