Re: SE TX/SW LA winter wx:Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!
It's over here. It never stopped once it started and snowed steadily, intensities varying, all afternoon, and finally at the end, it got heavier and started sticking. Everything is white and beautiful outside now. It's not nearly as much as last year, but wonderful nonetheless. I have icicles as well. I'll post some pics in a bit.
I could get used to our newly established annual December snowfall!

Snowing in Orange Grove north of Gulfport, MS but it's not sticking, air temperature is currently 49 degrees, nothing happening here at my house in Biloxi. Also snowing good in McComb, MS.

Yeah, it seems like December snowfalls are becoming somewhat "common" in southeast Texas. lol. There have been accumulating snowstorms 3 of the last 6 Decembers down there (2004, 2008, and now 2009). That's crazy!

Clearly global warming is playing a huge role!

Here's a few pics. It was still snowing when it got dark and I took some more pics, but they didn't turn out well. It didn't snow for all that long after dark, anyway.

It's officially the earliest accumulating snow ever for Lafayette now, .25" accumulation reported by the local tv station. Still have about 2 hours left before the snow ends so .5" - 1" not out of the question. Could have been more but for only December 4th I'm not complaining at all! Enjoy the snow everyone!

Where'd it accumulate? I'm in the south part of the parish and have had nothing but mostly sleet. I was in scott and they had some flurries but ended around 8ish and it was sleeting when we left our party.

Very light snow falling in my neighborhood now, very light, temperature has dropped to the current daytime low of 41, winds are out of the NNW at 18, gusting to 22. This is the windiest it has been all day but from the latest radar I saw on TWC it looks like the bulk of the snow is going to miss me and is already impacting areas about 60 miles to my N all the way to Jackson, MS and further N. Looks like just more rain for me here.

KATC reported that at their station.

jasons wrote:It was 25F here this morning. I didn't think it would get this cold....all of my Hibiscus and a few other tropicals in the yard are toast. At least I covered the most valuable items but I still had a pretty bad freeze kill today. Not a happy day for local gardeners.
It was 25ºf here at my house too and I consider myself in the "concrete jungle". Hibiscus are covered as well as azalea, but we will see what damage has been done when we uncover.
All in all, for SE TX, and especially the Houston metro area yesterday through this am(still 30ºf=at least 18 hrs at or below 32ºf at my house!!)has been an INCREDIBLE WEATHER EXPERIENCE!!

Sorry, Jason.
I had a low of 23° -
I'm pretty sure this is the lowest in years. It's warmed up to 29° right now. There's still some snow outside and lots of ice! My birdbath is rock solid. While excitedly announcing that my rain had finally changed over to snow, I posted at 1:53pm yesterday that the temp was 32° - this is a long time to be at or below freezing.
I believe the airport officially set a record as I just looked up the record for today and it was 28° and the temp reached 27° down at the airport.
Brrrrr!
Edit a few minutes later: a toasty 31° now!

Off topic but most Azaleas are hardy arent they? Heck I have seen them in Denver, and they certainly dont get covered here. They also never got covered in south mississippi when I lived there, even when we had those freak winter snaps when temps went into the teens. Hibiscus definately not hardy though unless you have a rose of sharon...SO why cover them? Had they thrown out fall blooms or something?
Believe it or not I have some really hardy things that still had blooms despite temps already dropping well into the teens over a month ago and some days with highs in the 20s back in october and november. I think they were phlox and purple salvia...of course salvia would survive a nuke.

The hibiscus had blooms on them last week. The azalea usually is hardy, but the one I covered has been hit hard by a freeze before so I take the precaution when we get to the mid 20's. Amazing to wake up in Houston with snow still covering the ground and roofs in many places. Definitely a historic event for us! Will it happen again this winter? Who knows? Indications are it is a distinct possibility unless the El Nino wanes or the current pattern tanks and doesn't set up again.

Don't give up on your hibiscus...just cut them back and they will probably be fine..mine always have been.
