TX Winter Wx Threat # 8--- TX Ice Storm

Hey Extreme I bet you miss Orlando a little more now huh? Instead of dealing with ice.

I am just glad we don't have any damage or power outages. It would have been a lot worse then. Right now it is actually kind of nice to look at (unless your driving on it). Makes it actually look like winter.

At the moment though I truly wouldn't really mind some 80-degree Orlando weather. I am freezing!

The official ice accumulation at Hooks Airport as of 8am was...0.17"

I wouldn't be surprised to see that jump to 0.25" after this next round comes through.

Moderate band of freezing rain and sleet approaching metro Houston now

It doesn't look like there will be any reinforcement to the cold air in Houston today. Temperatures should slowly modify above 32 by noon. I do expect more drizzle tonight, but it won't be as bad as last night in terms of icing. The Arctic air will have modified at least some by tonight, and last night was a borderline situation for the roads, anyway.

The bad news is that the ice storm won't be over today for parts of northeast Texas. Rain will be on the increase on Thursday all across Texas. Arctic air to our north may mean more freezing rain for north and northeast TX north into OK. Could turn into a major snow storm from Midland north into Lubbock on Friday and then NE across OK/AR.

Could be another round of freezing/frozen precip in store for north Texas next Tue/Wed, too.

I don't think we'll see the sun again in Houston until MAYBE next Thursday afternoon. But I don't see any more ice this far south with future surges -- yet.

Wow! what a mess here in the Hill Country. We have had freezing rain/sleet and now snow overnight (quite a bit too). Part of I-10 is shut down from kerrville to Boerne. I think I'm ready for this to stop now , we have not gotten above 27 in the last 40 hours....I also know Austin has lot's of major road closures....Portastorm or someone else from Austin can give you an update.

Yep, the temp is creeping up here around my house...now at 31.3. It was 30.2 when I got up this morning.


I NEVER dipped into the 20's with this event.

jeff sounds like you are in a situation like we were in over the weekend. The temp flirted with freezing but wouldn't maintain the ice. Thankfully that was the case, because with all the rain we got, it could've been really bad. Today, all I've seen is sleet though other parts of DFW are getting snow, or so the TV reporters are saying.

Thought that was the case here in the Galleria area, but since it has started precipitating again the temps have gone back down a degree and remain at 30.4ºf. If the column continues to cool and the precipitation continues to fill in like it looks like it may be doing, this day could become much more interesting in a bad way. Definitely still going to monitoring closely in case it appears that I need to head for the house.

yeah, when the precip. falls the temp. goes down and when it stops it jumps up. Seems like that has been the case all morning. If we could get some persistant precip., then I think that with the low dewpoints we could be back into an icy situation very quickly.

Checking in ... the city of Austin is further encrusted in ice after a night of steady light freezing rain. All major bridges and overpasses are shut down right now. Surface objects have a very heavy layer of ice and in the older sections of town -- where there are a number of large, old trees -- many power outages in the thousands of homes.

There's probably a half inch of ice on everything right now. I'm amazed (and thankful) we still have power.

All schools are closed and many businesses opening at lunch when the temp is "supposed" to rise above freezing. I have to go in as well and it will be interesting to see, first hand, how the roads are doing.

I've got steady rain over me right now but the temp continues to rise. We should be above freezing within the hour. I'm up to 31.7 now. If we actually stayed below freezing for the rest of the day, we would have a serious mess on our hands...not gonna happen though.


Edit: 32.0 now. We should start melting anytime now.

I am at 31.1F right now with light freezing rain. Also, my temperature has actually dropped .1F within the last 10 minutes as well.

The family is planning on taking me to Wimberley for my b-day to stay in a cabin from the 25th through the 28th of this month. Are we expecting another surge of arctic air around that time period?
