Looking at the latest PNA forecast, after a brief positive spell, it tanks once again by the end of Jan! That is what we want if we want cold to come back! The AO may also be negitive during the same period which is even better for us! Winter is NOT over here in the pac northwest after this weekend! :grrr:

RDub, where did you see the PNA forecast? It would be interesting to see. The one I see does show it trending closer to zero, with some runs going below zero, but nothing drastic . . . yet.

As we have learned, we can't trust the models beyond about a week or so. This last cold spell was supposed to last at least two weeks, but did not, and was not that severe anyway. So the forecast for mild and rainy for two weeks may not last beyond a week or 10 days. Or maybe it will, but it is useless to try to look beyond about 7-10 days.

So what's the deal with this latest marginal over-riding event? Latest NWS discussion barely touches on it...last night they were talking about issuing a Winter Storm Watch. Looks like too much warm air will be in place to start as snow. Can someone please give me an update.

Here is where you can find the PNA forecast. Each day, it trends more downward by end of month.
Anthony, hopefully next NWS discussion will make things a little more clear. Doubt it though

If you go to the PNA past charts which go back to 1950, you can plainly see every cold outbreak the pac northwest has had. Jan-march of 1989 would be an example. Very fasinating to look at. We are never cold with a positive PNA. Or take a look at 1997-1998 a warm winter exept one cold spell we had for a few days in Jan.

Anyone else here find the local media coverage of the weather this week almost shameful??

Fox Channel 13 has been desperately sending reporters out into the "Deep Freeze" to find snow. Last night they finally found it... a quarter of an inch of ice in Sammamish!! This was the freakin TOP story. Its disgraceful and they lose all credibility in my opinion. The weather this week has not even been that unusual... it is JANUARY.

Tuesday night... Walter Kelley comes on and backtracks his snow forecast as temperatures were rising into the 40's with light rain. Then the NEXT STORY starts out: "with the all snow falling tonight... on top of all that ice... the commute tomorrow morning will be almost impossible".

DO THEY LISTEN TO WHAT WALTER JUST SAID??!!! THEY ARE MAKING UP THE NEWS NOW.

The next morning dawned warm and dry with temperatures in the mid-40's. No snow... and any left over ice had melted during the night.

Do the reporters wake up and go "we blew it"?? Or do they even care??

They don't care TT. Seems like now adays they are only on TV to entertain. I would laugh when there would be a special deep freeze update every hour on Q13 yet the temp is seattle was 43 degrees. Walter Kelly is no meterologist!!!!

Watching my old news coverage of the big 1996 storm, there was no channel 13 news, and the other stations did a good job of covering it.

Q-13 was absolutely horrible. They had updates every 1/2 hour all this week with "Deep Freeze" coverage. It was the stupidest thing I had ever seen (well close anyway). At least KOMO is willing to admit that things didn't turn out the way they expected, but Q-13 just played along like nothing had changed. I can't imagine the frenzy they'd have in a 3 foot, or for that matter a 3", Seattle snowstorm.

Yeah at least Komo did a story explaining why Seattle didn't get burried in snow, and admitted they were wrong.
I can't stand MJ macdurmet or whatever her name is either, she is quite annoying.

R-Dub... how do you watch old news coverage... did you tape it?

The difference there is... the 1996 storm was a pretty big deal. They would have been justified in covering it extensively.

For the 2.5 million people living south of Everett this last week of winter weather was a complete joke. Maybe the snow on Sunday morning deserved a brief mention but otherwise it should not have even been covered at all outside of the weather segment.

They got word last week about an upcoming cold spell. Like a dog with a bone they would not let go. They were going to milk this for everything they had... even when it did not materialize. They were determined to search high and low to make this a story.

It is comical... and sad. Do they realize that most of Seattle is laughing at them?? I have talked to people at work (who are not weather fanatics like myself) and they all say the same thing... the local news coverage is a joke. How is that good for their station???

Yeah I tape them......I know I am a freak  I have extensive coverage of every winterstorm from the arctic outbreak of Jan 1996 on to present time. I had great coverage of the great Dec 1990 storm, but the tape was nuked in the VCR yrs ago

I love going back and watching those old tapes. The Dec 1996 is the best though, with roofs collapsing and everything. It was awesome to see seattle under 2 feet of snow! Seattle was completely stopped!!! Nobody could go anywhere.

R Dub, I saw that PNA site, it is the same one I look at, and it is a bit confusing. The middle chart shows the PNA as negative at the end and still going down, but the bottom chart, which is supposed to be more long range, shows it approching zero but still being positive. I was not sure how to interpert that.

The red marks are forecasted PNA, each mark is a Ensemble model. Most all going negitive by the end of the month, as a few days a go only a couple showed negitive. So its a trend thing going on. I am no expert though, Brennan was the big expert on that.

R-Dub... thats awesome. How fun to watch to the actual coverage from 1996. That would be fascinating.

You should convert them to a movie file and send it out to us weather fanatics!!
