When was the last time the USA has been hit with a true Siberian Express type cold wave? Does this have the possibilty to be one?

I will feel more cofindent when we get to day 6 and the models show the cold coming down the plains.

i really dont know what to think about this impending pattern change.Last year was the same models always had the cold 10 days out but it never happened.I am by no means wanting a warm winter i like snow and would love for my 3 yr old nephew to finally see some real snow on the ground a few inches deep but i am skeptical of this happening this year..

I wish SOME pattern change would come. I hate this one. I like rain sometimes, but this is ridiculous. And I'm SICK of all the severe weather.

I don't see anything impressive as far as some big pattern change, looks like the stupid ridge persists here.

This is getting very old. We're going to be near 70(SEVENTY!) on a Saturday in JANUARY!

You may see that area of "adnormal cold" sink futher south during that time frame, as a large portion of the country from Texas to Washington will fell the effects of a very strong polor high by mid month or shortly after according to the models.

How long it last will be the BIG question? I say at least 3 to 4 days before it slides east.

My that model graphic, cold air seems to lose much of it's punch once it settles into Texas through the Mid Atlantic. Heck, it is better than what we have now-63 degrees and overcast waiting for more rain. Looking forward to the Spring cool down.

Here is the latest CPC map for the "ADNORMALY COLD" area, see how it now dips way down into TX, it covers the entire US from the central plains westward.

IMO "Abnormal Cold" means temps both high and low that is not the norm for that part of the country. It does not mean severe cold that last only a few days but rather a lower than normal mean for 7 days or longer

That's what I was thinking. Abnormal to me just doesn't say "bitter" cold.

Abnormal cold for NTX would be 7 or greater days with highs and lows about 10 to 15 degrees below the seasonal avg which for us this time of the year would be 54/34. So a week or more of H/L temps of lower 40's/20's would be abnormal.

I wouldnt pretend to be any good at figuring out what the surface temps would translate from theses maps.. anybody care to help me out.. is there a table of sorts for dumbies?
